1. Complete the graphic organizer to track the traits of the important characters.
Pay attention to identifying characteristics that help define each person. Then jot
them in each circle as shown in the example.
2. In this section, what events does the author include to show the ways in which
war is changing the atmosphere at Devon? Give at least two examples.
3. On page 111, Finny states: “What I mean is, I love winter, and when you really
love something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love.” How
does this quote relate to the relationship Finny and Gene have, to Finny’s fall
and his reaction to Gene after the fall?
4. What is Finny’s theory about the war? Does Gene believe him? Justify.
5. Why is it surprising that Leper is the first Devon boy to enlist? In what ways is
he different from the other boys?
6. Analyzing Character. In his note to Gene, Leper pleads, “I have escaped and
need help. . . .” Why is Gene, who is on the brink of adulthood, unable and
unwilling to feel sorry for Leper? In a paragraph, evaluate Gene’s response to
Leper’s breakdown, and explain what the response suggests about Gene. Be sure
to support your opinions with examples from the text.
7. Analyze how the theme of peer pressure is shown in chapter 8.
