Dear Dr. Bruce,

The purpose of this letter is to express that I have met the objective of the student

learning outcomes (SLOs). The categories of the SLOs are rhetorical focus, ethical research,

persuasive arguments, organization and focus, academic language and design, and collaboration.

The SLOs helped guide the class on becoming more effective writers with a focus on

communicating in the sciences. This document is divided by major assignment and minor

assignments, where the SLOs used are explained. The assignments used to establish fulfillment

of the SLOs are the annotated bibliography, a peer review of the bibliography, a rhetorical

triangle from the scholars notebook, and this letter.

The annotated bibliography demonstrates competence of SLOs 1, 2, 4, and 5. SLO 1,

rhetorical focus was used in this assignment because this was a piece of formal writing which

was submitted for a grade. SLO 2, ethical research, was used because each source has APA
citation formatted as: Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article. Title

of Journal, volume number, page range. Retrieved from https://www.someaddress.com/full/url/.

The majority of the matches detected from Turnitin is the citations. SLO 4, organization and

focus, is used because the assignment is organized with an introduction at the beginning

followed by annotations. The annotations are ordered as a) citation, b) summary in 30 words, and

c) significance of research in 100 words. SLO 5, academic language and design, is used because

the assignment is academic writing. The bibliography does not assume gender and culture of the

audience.

A peer review of the annotated bibliography was completed during class. Similar to the

many peer reviews done in class, valuable advice was given and implemented to the final copy

of the annotated bibliography. This peer review demonstrates SLO 6, collaboration. Notes on the

peer review and the rubric from Eduardo Alcaraz were used to improve the revision. The

definition rhetorical triangle fulfills SLO 1, rhetorical focus. This assignment is an example of

informal writing because it was a scholar’s notebook entry and is similar to notes for a class

which are not submitted for a grade. This letter demonstrates SLO 3, persuasive arguments.

Examples of the use of the SLOs in assignments are used as evidence to convince you that the

SLOs were met.

The writing lessons and SLOs will be applied to writing in the future and will help

sharpen the skills to become an effective writer. When writing, especially in the sciences this

class has made me a more effective communicator.

Sincerely,

Roger Vuong
