Different genre’s comparisons

“Mop” (Comedy Short Film) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhn6AnCOtMI

This short movie is about a night cleaner, who accidentally kills an

office worker; he must hide the body without being seen. The genre of
the short film is comedy we can tell it is a comedy due to the four
micro aspects used in the making of it. This clip begins with a montage
of the city, which helps show the audience where it is set, which is in
the city. The film meets Todorov’s theory, as this has a an equilibrium
that disrupts the normal every day which is the death of the agent, from slipping over the wet floor,
it then is resolved as he gets rid of the body, and then comes back to the scene to find a new
equilibrium (a new dead agent). The first reason why people watch comedy movies is because they
want to be entertained. People like to be entertained because they want to relax and try to escape
from reality, so due to this the target audience for this film would be young teens and older teens as
most people of this age demographic have a stressful school day and watching a comedy would
cheer them up due to the effects of the film making them laugh, this will change the mood.

Mise-en-scene

Throughout the first 30 seconds we can see the use of iconography in

the clip such as the mop, which ends up being a murder weapon as an
agent slips over the wet floor and dies, the use of the mop being used as
the “murder weapon” helps us to understand that it is a comedy, mostly
because a mop isn’t a dangerous weapon it is just used to clean the
floor, so the use of it as the “weapon” shows off a funny side to it. This
makes the audience amused by the fact that he mops the floor and
before he can put down the wet sign, signs someone falls over it and
dies. As it wasn’t put out he then gets rid of the body to come back and
find another body, this meets the genre of comedy as he didn’t get the
sign out onto the wet floor which resulted in someone dying, we can see
he is confused and then panicked as he tries to remove the body. The use
of the iconography helps show us as an audience that the genre is comedy. Another piece of mise
en scene that they use later on in the movie is the use of the chair and sunglasses. They have used
the chair to good effect because when the cleaner is opening the car the agent starts sliding diown
the hill on the chair. This scene is funny and this helps makes the film conventional to the comedy
genre.

Editing:

This clip begins with a montage of the city, which helps show the
audience where it is set, which is in the city. Through the use of faced
paced clips and the montage, it is conventional to the genre of comedy
as comedy’s pace is faster than other genres as it is to show off a funny
element of the clip. We also then have an establishing shot to show us the corridor it is set in and
the worker himself. The use of the pace varies throughout the video, as at the start it shows fast-
pasted clips to establish where it is set and to show the genre and then throughout the clip there are
slow paced moments, like when the agent feel and died we had a close up of his face and then a
slow paced camera movement to show us what he is thinking. The used of cuts in the video from
different angles helps us to see the struggle he goes through to move the body. This has been used
so that the audience can see that he is trying hard to hide it and the cuts are conventional to the
genre as the multiple cuts shows us his struggle of picking up his body, we can see this as 0:53 in the
video. Throughout this video they always use a quick pace; this is often seen in the comedy genre
and makes this video conventional to the comedy genre.

Cinematography:

In this short film there were many different uses of

cinematography to show of the emotion of the worker such as
close ups, and bird eye view shots to show off a different angle of
the event, this also brings a funny element to it as we see the
body from above and then it being dragged away from the screen
in a struggle, this makes it funny as we see the body from above
slowly get dragged off the screen. This makes the audience believe that the man is really dead, as
the lifeless body is dragged from the screen. Close up shorts were used so that we as an audience
can see the emotion and facial features of the working as he has accidently committed a murder.
The close ups have been used as we need to see his expressions and dialogue isn’t used in this short
movie it is more just facial expressions and sounds. This has been used to make it meet its
conventions of the genre as it helps bring a funny element to it, as it has no dialogue. The high angle
shot was used in a way to make the scene more dramatic as we are looking down on the two
characters, this is effective as High-angle shots can make the subject seem vulnerable or powerless,
which he is as it is the dead body of an agent being dragged away. Throughout this video close ups
are often used this expresses the characters emotions and this make this video conventional to the
comedy genre.

Sound:

The film is full of diegetic sound, such as the slipping over onto the
floor and the dragging of the body and then the struggle of the man
trying to hide it all. These are sounds that are all due to the
environment he is in; the sound of the body being dragged to the
elevator is sounds that are already there due to the friction against
the floor and the buttons of the elevator. The use of this helps
making it funny, as there is no dialogue it is all facial expression and environmental sounds such as
the panic on his face but the dragging of his body. Another technique that features throughout this
film is non diegetic music which has been added. In the lift they have added music in which is funny
and has also featured in other comedic films. This music makes the scene funnier when the doors
open and the man is gobsmacked that he is lifting him up in the lift. The music makes the scene
funnier and this makes it more conventional to the comedy genre.
