PROBLEM STATEMENT
To determine which cycle (mountain bike and BMX bike) is faster when travelling
a 100m distance.
3
INTRODUCTION
Cycling, also called biking or bicycling, is the use of bicycles
for transport, recreation, exercise or sport. People engaged in cycling are referred
to as cyclist, bikers or less commonly, as bicyclists. The primary differences
between BMX bikes and mountain, or MTB, bikes are in their design. A BMX
bike is designed for a sprint around a short man-made track, with a smooth surface
linking large jumps, while a MTB is designed to travel long distances over rough,
natural terrain. BMX bikes have no suspension. Riders need maximum thrust and
power as they encounter obstacles during their sprint. Their legs and body absorb
impacts and pump through hoops. A modern MTB can be a hardtail, with only
front suspension, or may be fully suspended. Standard BMX wheels measure 20
inches in diameter and 24 inches for the cruiser class. Rigid for rapid changes in
direction, they are heavily laced for the strength to handle big landings. MTB
wheels are 26-inch standard and oversized 29 inch. The larger wheels roll more
easily over rocks, ruts and logs. Athletes are chosen based on their abilities such as
agility, speed and power. This S.B.A attempts to discover if a MTB/BMX is faster
when travelling a 100m distance. Athletes of the same peer group will carry out
this event on different tracks as to gather data for completing this SBA.
4
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
1. Ten students of the same peer group will be selected to partake in this event.
2. Each student will first use the MTB to complete the 100m distance.
3. The student will complete the distance for three trials and the time taken for
each trial will be recorded in a table.
4. Average time taken will be calculated.
5. For each trial they are allow to rest for 30 seconds.
6. Repeat steps 2-4 using the BMX bike.
7. The data will be compared and analyzed.

bike and BMX bike
Difference of time taken= BMX bike average Speed-Mountain bike average speed
Difference of time taken= BMX bike time taken – Mountain bike taken

2 15.9 17.4 +1.5
3 16.4 17.1 +0.7
4 16.7 17.4 +0.7

8 15.5 17.3 +1.8
9 16.3 17.4 +1.1
10 16.4 17.5 +1.1
A positive answer signifies that the mountain bike is faster than the BMX bike and
a negative answer signifies that the mountain bike is slower than the BMX bike.
12
FINDINGS
From the data collected the comparison made showed that the BMX bike took
more time to complete the 100m distance than mountain bike.
13
CONCLUSION
In this investigation it can be seen that the mountain bike is faster than the BMX
bike when completing the 100m distance.
