6 Bar Quick Return Mechanism
A quick return mechanism is an apparatus to produce a reciprocating motion in
which the time taken for travel in one direction is less than in the other. It is driven by
a circular motion source (typically a motor of some sort) and uses a system of links and
sliding joints.
Quick return is a
common feature of
tools in which the
action is performed
in only one
direction of the
stroke, such as
shapers and
powered saws,
because it allows
less time to be
spent on returning Figure 1 Six bar quick return Mechanism
the tool to its
initial position.

Applications
This mechanisms is used in all the machines that do their job in one stroke and
in the back stroke they do nothing. In ordinary machines the backward stroke time
and forward stroke time both are equal. Thus it wastes our time. This time could be
saved by bringing back the mechanism fastly as is done is quick return mechanism.
The ratio of time taken in the forward stroke to that taken in the backward stroke is
called time ratio. The greater the time ratio, greater will be the saving of time and vice
versa.
This mechanism is used in the following machines.
 Lathe machine
 Shaper
 Screw press
 Power-driven saw
 Mechanical actuator
 Revolver mechanisms

Detailed Design
The quick return mechanism that we are going to make consists of 5 parts the
detail of each part is explained below.
