Kurdistan Regional Government- Iraq Final Exam-Second attempt (2017-2018)

Salahaddin University – Erbil Date: 10 / 9 / 2018

College of Engineering Time: 3 hr
Civil Engineering Department Subject: Water Supply and Sewerage
Fourth year students Lecturer: Asst. Prof. Dr. Shuokr Qarani

Theoretical Part:
Note: Show all necessary details and equations for the calculations.

Q.1: (10+10+5=25 Marks)

A) A city has a population of 125 000. Average daily demand is 330 LPCD. Maximum daily
demand is 200 % of the average demand. Number of tanks =5. Four hourly demand is given in
the following table. Determine the capacity of one tank (m 3 ).
Period of day % of demand Period of day % of demand
12-4 a.m. 15 12-4 p.m. 120
4-8 a.m. 55 4-8 p.m. 160
8-12 180 8-12 70

B) A community with a population of 50000 has an average water consumption of 400 LPCD.
Maximum demand is 180%. Fire resistant materials with C factor of 0.6 are used for construction of
buildings. Each building has six floors. Area of one floor is 600 m2. According to the standards, the
fire flow must be maintained for 10 h for required fire flow of greater than 8505 L/min. Determine
total required amount of water during a fire (L/d).

C) List propertied of PEX pipes.

Q.2: (20+5=25 Marks)

A) Main pipes of a water distribution
system are shown in the figure. Average
daily demand is 260 LPCD. Maximum
and minimum daily demands of average
demand are 180 % and 50 %,
respectively. Maximum demand on
hourly basis is 150 % of the average
demand. Height of elevated tank at
location A=20m. C=120, K=0.849.
Assume S=0.006 for all pipes.
Determine:
1) Diameter of pipe AC (cm).
2) Available pressure at locations E and
G (m as a head of water).

B) In disinfection process, show poor and superior baffling in rectangular basins.

Q.3: (15+10=25 Marks)
A) A water treatment plant treats 600 m3/h of river water. Four filter tanks are used in the filter
unit. Assume the rate of flow through the filter bed is 144 m3/ (m2.d). Total area of perforations =
0.35 % * area of filter tank. Total area of laterals = 2.5 * total area of perforations. Total number of
laterals in the filter tank = 40 laterals. Detention time and G value for the flocculation tank are 25
min and 30 s-1, respectively. Kinematic viscosity of water is 1.004* 10-6 m2/s; while dynamic
viscosity is 1.002* 10-3 Pa.s. Dosage of alum is 16 mg/L. Determine:
1) Diameter of the lateral (cm) in each filter tank.
2) Power input (kW) for the flocculation tank.
3) Amount of alum (kg) per day.

B) If the surface overflow rate is 40 m3 /(m2.d) and the weir overflow rate is 360 m3/(m.d),
determine the radius (m) and flow (m3/d) for a circular clarifier with a single weir.

Q.4: (20+5=25 Marks) F, Elev.= 455.5 m

figure. Intensity of rainfall is 60 mm/h. Details are
