Topic of research : Research Project : Detailed Research Project :
STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF NON Gears are commonly used machine
STANDARD GEARS WITH component in power transmission for
ASYMMETRIC GEAR TOOTH FOR many applications, such as industrial
ENHANCEMENT OF machinery, automotive and
PERFORMANCE, WEAR AND aerospace. Spur gears are used to
CRACK PROPAGATION transmit the power between the
parallel shafts. The modern power
transmission drives demand high load
carrying capacity, high strength to
weight ratio, reduced noise and
vibration with compactness in size.
The proper selection of parameters
like gear teeth number, contact ratio,
pressure angle at design stage plays
a major role to improve the load
carrying capacity of the gear tooth
which in turn to reduce the tooth
bending and surface wear. Also,
modifying the gear tooth geometry as
asymmetric form in unidirectional
applications increases the
transmission capacity of gears.
Hence, in this work investigation of
asymmetric normal contact ratio
(NCR), high contact ratio (HCR) and
enhanced high contact ratio (EHCR)
spur gears are considered and there
parameters are varied for
enhancement of performance
characteristics and efficiency through
finite element analysis. In addition,
estimation of gear surface wear is to
be done in gear drives for particular
number of cycles. As gear contact
surface wear is the most frequent
failure modes in gear systems.
Localized wear due to maximum
bending stress can also initiate a
crack. Hence crack study is important
to know the propagation of crack and
its information which can be used to
avoid failure and maintain the
performance of the geared system
uninterrupted. The study can be used
to predict strength, durability and
avoiding unexpected failure of gear
systems. Keywords: Spur Gear, Finite
element analysis, Asymmetric,
Efficiency, Wear, Crack Propagation.
