CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Backgroun of the study

 English is one of the most important languages in the world. English is taught at all levels

from kindergarten up to colleges or universities

 In learning English, students must mater the English skill. Students have to study four

language skills. Those is listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

 Students mastery have several factors, that is internal and external factor.

Internal factor is relation with the students. In internal factor there cognitive and incognitive.

Cognitive as smart, think creative, reasonable mastery. And incognitive as motivation, inters,

perception, etc.

External is from the students outside as curriculum, parents, teacher, etc.

 Motivation is the crucial element in learning. motivation will support the students to be

success in learning because it can encourage the students to learn what they like.

There are to that influence the motivation, that is low and high.

If high students motivation so the learning result will be high to learning result and the other

way if low students motivation so the learning result is low.

 Condition of teaching and learning that effective is marked with the existence of motivate

from the students in learning process. The teacher has obligation to motivate the students in

learning English. One of the ways is giving an appreciation to the students who have an

achievement.
 In curriculum of Junior High School (KTSP), English have four skills. In syllabus the

primary subject to learn is speaking and listening. Therefore listening and speaking is one of

the difficult skills and important for them.

 In lesson plan (RPP), the teacher wants the students to understand English well so that they

can use it in their environment.

 SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda is one of the favorite school in samarinda. It can be seen based on

achievement and total number of the students.

 Based on the background above the researcher will do research on the English learning

motivation on SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda.

1.2 Objectives of the study

According to the problem stated above, the purposes of the study are:

1. To find out the factors that influence learning motivation in English on 8th grade students of

SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda

2. To find out the learning process motivation in English subject on 8th grade students of SMP

Negeri 5 Samarinda

1.4 Significance of the Study

By carrying out this research, it’s expected that the finding will give some advantages as

follow:

1. To the teacher

It is expected that this study will improve their teaching style, especially the suitable

approach or method so that it will be matched to their students motivation in learning English

achievement especially in teaching speaking.

2. To the students

It is hoped that this study will increase the students motivation in learning English.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

According to this study, the scope and limitation of the study as the following:

1. This study focuses on the English learning motivation of the 8th grade students of SMP

Negeri 5 Samarinda.

2. The subjects of this study are the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda

1.6 Definition of Key Terms

To find a clear description, the researcher is formulates the definition of key terms are as

follow:

1. Learning

Learning is a relatively permanent change in behavioral tendency and is the result of

reinforced practice (Kinble and Gramezy in Brown 2000).


2. Motivation

Motivation is very strongly related to achievement in language learning. Motivation is more,

or less, important than natural aptitude for learning, though at least one well know study tend

towards the claim that motivation is ultimate more important.

3. Motivation in learning English

Motivation in learning English can be defined as the tendency that drives someone to know,

acquiring or skills, which comes from himself or any influence factors from the environment,

surround him related to English both passively and actively.

CHAPTER III

RESEACHR METODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

Research design is descriptive qualitative

3.2 Subject of the Study

Subjects of the study are the of 8th grade students of SMP 5 Samarinda in academic year

2013/1014. The total class of SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda was 15 class (A-N) so the research will

be take 3 class (A-C). The number of the students in one class are 40 students.

3.3 Research Instruments

Questionnaire and Observation

3.4 Data Collection Techniques

First, the researcher will conduct the questionnaire to the students.

Second, doing the questionnaire, the researcher does the observation in the class to know the

techniques used by the English Teacher of SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda, whether the technique are

suitable to increase the students motivation in English.

3.5 Data Analysis Techniques

This study used a flow model of analysis will be used that proposed by Miles and Huberman.
