Augmented Reality (AR) technology enhances human performance by overlaying context-

aware technical information over complex industrial tasks.

To increase air transport safety, human error must be eliminated from the assembly and
maintenance of aircraft. This is a critical issue, because the failure of aircraft systems can
result in the loss of human life.

In addition, high skill and lengthy training are required to work with complex avionics
systems — it takes about 2000 hours to correctly train an aviation maintenance inspector,
and this knowledge is hard to transfer to another worker [1].

Currently, complex operations are executed following manuals and handbooks. These can
induce frustration and low quality performance, because they are inefficient and
cumbersome to operate when a task has many sub-steps and variables. In addition, tasks
executed from memory may suffer from inaccurate execution due to imperfect recall — a
problem which affects even experienced workers [2]. Combined, this decreased process
efficiency results in a heavy cost for the aviation industry.

Existing research focusing on eliminating human errors and increasing the effectiveness of
industrial training using AR technology shows promising results. However, because AR is
still in its infancy, the solutions that are developed are too specialised for a specific task,
and so cannot be used in other operations or environments.

This thesis will focus on how Airbus can employ AR in their own unique industrial
processes, focusing on their aircraft assembly, maintenance and training procedures. It will
perform a hierarchical task analysis and training needs analysis of existing processes to
analyse which procedure would be most suited for improvement using AR. Research will
be conduced to discover which blend of Hardware, Development Platform, Tracking
Solution, Visualisation Method and Authoring Solution would be most suited for the
process, and a proof-of-concept will be developed. After, the effectiveness of the AR
solution at eliminating errors and increasing process efficiency will be critically evaluated,
by conducting a trail with an AR group and a control group. The output of this process will
help inform Airbus and the industry on how to integrate this emerging technology with
their existing systems.
