Sources of Ethics

“It’s not easy to control powerful impulses, to be accountable for our attitudes and
actions, to tackle unpleasant tasks, or to sacrifice the now for later. It’s not easy to bear criticism
and learn from it without getting angry, to take advice, and to admit error”, quoted from the
famous ethicist in the name of Jopherson. Indeed, the choice is ours to make. We can take the
path of least resistance, play the game like most people do and be part of a system. To take a
right path, there should be an ethics or Principles to lead your way or path in life.

There are currently many options on how to take the right path. But as a public servant
serving in the Military Academy, it is my legal mandate to follow Republic Act No. 6713 also
known as the “Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, the
Civil Service Omnibus Rules and Regulations and AFP Implementing Rules and Regulations.

In the context of Philippine government, the highest standards of ethics are embodied in
Republic Act No. 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and
Employees. RA 6713 also bears the eight (8) norms of conduct – commitment to public interest,
professionalism, justness and sincerity, political neutrality, responsiveness to the public,
nationalism and patriotism, commitment to democracy, and simple living. These norms of
conduct govern the principle of ethics for the lingkod bayani who works in the environment
where corruption increases. The same norms promote the idea that even in the smallest of
matters, a lingkod bayani should be able to withstand temptation, reject mediocrity, and protect
his or her integrity. Republic Act No. 6713 is an act establishing a code of conduct and ethical
standards for public officials and employees, to uphold the time-honored principle of public
office being a public trust, granting incentives and rewards for exemplary service, enumerating
prohibited acts and transactions and providing penalties for violations thereof. There are

As I watch the video clip, I learned that the transformational policing started with the
word “I”. The mindset change must start with you and further, make this world a better place to
live in. I remember the song of the late Michael Jackson, the lyrics educate everyone by saying,
I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways and no message could
have been any clearer. So, if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself,
and then make a CHANGE.

code of ethics is a guide of principles designed to help professionals conduct business

honestly and with integrity. A code of ethics document may outline the mission and values of the
business or organization, how professionals are supposed to approach problems, the ethical
principles based on the organization's core values and the standards to which the professional
is held. A code of ethics also referred to as an "ethical code," may encompass areas such as
business ethics, a code of professional practice and an employee code of conduct.

In addition to the brilliant idea of officer Youth in mind setting Shift, it is also important to
integrate to their works the so called “work integrity”. Integrity refers to wholeness and
completeness which means the something intangible remains not tampered or altered. Some
people may think that they maintain their integrity by keeping their wrongdoings a secret.
Exposed or not, however, they have already damaged their integrity. After all, integrity involves
doing the right thing even if nobody sees you. We all know that habits soon become lifestyles.
By not being vigilant enough, we become participants in maintaining not ideal in this world. The
more we “let things pass”, the more ethical standards get lowered.

People gauge our integrity by our words and actions. I hope Filipinos will be part of the
best moments in Criminal Justice System as what Police Officer Youth did to his country;
moments that champions a “work integrity” and “mind setting shift” to betterment of everyone
instead of destroying our neighborhood or worst killing each other. That is our challenge that I
hope all of us will be eager to accept.

Again, let ponder the song “Man in the mirror”, I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I'm
asking him to change his ways and no message could have been any clearer. So, if you want to
make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and then make a CHANGE.

Maybe you are the CHANGE you wish to see in the world today. Ethics in general refers
to a system of good and bad, moral and immoral, fair and unfair. It is a code of conduct that is
supposed to align behaviors within an organization and the social framework.

Honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, tolerance, love, fidelity, integrity, fairness,

self-control, and prudence are all examples of virtues. Virtue ethics asks of any action, "What
kind of person will I become if I do this?" or "Is this action consistent with my acting at my best?"
