INTRODUCTION AND AIM

Monday, On 23th October 2017, Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Daerah Kluang (JPS)
and Majlis Belia Daerah Kluang had been organized the programme Community in River
(COIR). This programme was an idea from Y.B. Datuk Haji Ayub bin Rahmat, Pengerusi
Jawatankuasa Kesihatan, Alam Sekitar, Pendidikan dan Penerangan Negeri Johor. The aim of
this programme is to bring government agencies, youths and communities to cooperate with
each other to take care the environment near the river by clean up the river from rubbish and
also develop relationship among community. The programme was held at Daerah Kluang, Johor
near Mengkibol River and the activity was start from 7.00 am and end at 12.00 pm. The
program was attended by 200 peoples which is included students from UTHM, SM Sains Johor,
voluntary and kindergarten students. There are four objective of this programme that is :-

1. To launched the programme Community in River (COIR) at Kluang District.

2. To provide awareness to the public regarding the important of preserve the environment
and the importance of a clean stream.
3. To give benefit to the youth and community to cooperate with JPS to protect and keep
the river clean.
4. To develop relationship between Government Agencies, youths, and community.

ISSUE AT THE CASE STUDY

1. less garbage bin and recycle bin

- people throw away the rubbish everywhere and also into the Mengkibol river.

2. lot of plastic throw away

- damage the view of that place and it can make the negative aspect from visitors.

3. lot of glass bottles throw away

- many flattened glass fragments can cause injured to people who go to that area.

4. smell pollution
- the Mengkibol river produces a rotten ordor and its effects to our emotion and also
our health because we sniffing rotten air.

5. water pollution
- the water changes colour and it contain contaminant particles in the river.
- the local people who eats food from the river is likely to have food poisoning because
the marine life live in that water had been contaminate by the water pollution.
- eat the food was not good for healthy.

6. lack of knowledge about awareness

- the community & local people lack of knowledge about awareness about how
important natural conservation to living things and ecosystem.
- lack of knowledge also make people have no sense of cleanliness and they not
ashamed to throw away the rubbish and it will become their habit.

OVERALL PERPECTIVES

For overall activity that I get from this programme, I had learnt a lot about the importance
to preserve environment and stream to make sure the river clean from any rubbish and
contaminant. This because the water is really importance to us as a living things. It is because
all living things such as plants, animals and human being need water to survive. we as human
need water for our supply of beverages and used in our daily work, same as plant because they
need to absorb the water to get nutrient and for growth, same goes to animal also. If we, as a
humans don’t take care the cleanliness of our stream and river then it will be polluted. If the
water polluted then it will give bad impact to our life. It will cause harm to our body because we
drink a contaminant water and for plant and animal it will not growth normally and it can bring
death to living things.

From my observation from clean up activity, there was a lot of junk like plastic and glass
bottles being thrown away and this cause the riverside littered with a lot of rubbish and it
damage the view of that place. Besides that, I observe that the river was not well-drained
drainage and because of that the river produces a rotten ordor and its cause a smell pollution.
This water pollution also can kill the marine life that live in the river such as fish, plankton and so
on. Therefore, this can disturb the ecosystem and the polluted environmental also can be a
hazard for our health and can cause several disease.

Besides, from this programme it’s also can develop relationship between youth like us as
a students with the community. This because we cooperated with each other to clean up the
river. It also created a bond of relationship not only with community but among students
themselves. This can be seen through the activity when we helping each other to collect the
rubbish even our professor also join us collect rubbish and not only as an observer to observe
us. Therefore, this activity not just a gathering activity and environmental cleansing but it’s also
fostering friendship.

Besides that, we also get to know how to organized any programme in future. This
because in that programme we can see how JPS and Majlis Belia Kluang control the
programme by follow the tentative that they has been organised. Because of that the
programme run smoothly and its fits with community needs and everyone feels satisfied.
Besides that, there has many activity which is cooking contest, colouring contest and also lucky
draw. Other than that, there are also several exhibitions on display such as health information,
environment, about JPS organisation, recycle and also how to make a compose from waste
product. Therefore, we get more information not only about environmental.

CONCLUSION/SUGGESTION

As a conclusion, the programme bring more benefit and awareness to us about how
importance our nature for the next generation. Nowadays people are lack of knowledge about
how importance our nature to our ecosystem. That why we need to learnt more about nature
conservation to gained more knowledge and we can educated the next generation for long term.
For my suggestion, I suggest that government agencies and community should make more
programme and awareness campaign about the importance of environmental care and
cleanliness. They also should bring more youths to join the programme because we as adults
should teach them how to conserve environment. As parents they should teach and provide
education on the care of environment to their children start from childhood. So that, they can
develop it when they grow up and apply the knowledge. Besides that, Majlis Bandar raya
Kluang District should provide more garbage bin and recycle bin.
