 URING YOUR VISIT - OBSERVATION:
D
Review the prompts i n advance and take a small notebook on your fieldwork visit. You should
be taking notes on each of these topics so you will be able to add your observations after you
return.
Close Read your Surroundings:
Observe the physical space and "read" them as if close reading a text. Pay attention to:
● sensory details
● signs posted
● languages you hear
● colors of the offices and uniforms.
● does the location have a certain smell?
● what sounds do you hear?
Observations:
Different painting, funtruite: couches, chairs, tables, eating utensils, wheelchairs, pink
purple green brown colors, purple and blue nurse scrubs, soft voices, laughter,

Observe your Emotional Response: Take notice of your reactions (emotional and physical)
to different things and reflect on why you might be reacting this way.

Observations: : I felt happy and amazed. I felt like this because watching how excited the
residents were when they were listening to their music, some were dancing, tapping their
feet to the beat of the music, closing their eyes soaking up the music, smiling. It was
amazing to see how music can switch their attitude and see them loosen up.

Ask questions of the person you’re shadowing and/or the industry people you encounter:
- general questions of interest
- relating to your potential career choices
- public health related issues and challenges they see as important to consider.

Record your questions and answers here.

Observations: what do the resident do for fun? What activities?
What other type of activities can we do with the residents besides listening to music?
How do we modvate the residents to do activities?
What some questions to ask the residents?

Summary Reflection
After your return from your fieldwork experience address each prompt below to capture your
thoughts on your experience.

Reflect on specific highlights or observations from the day. What was a lesson (big or small)
you took away from your experience? . Consider lessons that presented themselves in both
positive and negative ways.
Reflection: What I took away from today is most of the residents there are alone and do
not see family as much as they seem to so it is nice for people to go and volunteer and
spend time with them and just sitting there talking with them, because most of the day
the sit around and do not do much so I think it's nice that as a class we are able to go
and interact with them and bring them a joy into the center.

How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your expectations? Explain and
include specific details from your fieldwork notes to help support your answer
Reflection:: This experience meet my expectations because it was what I was
expecting but my resident thought she was not intrestering so she did not share but
but towards the end she warmed up and said next time we will talk more.

What connection can be made between what you saw on your fieldwork experience and
the functions of Public Health?
Some suggestions
- the role of public health within this career path
- public health needs or challenges within the field you observed
- thoughts on how to address these needs

Reflection:: I said registered nurses working and helping the residents, and saw how
some of the old people are stubborn and how they dealt with it, and I really saw the
connections the RN’S had with the residents. When being a nurse you need to be able
to communicate with others and that is what those nurses were doing well at.
