Abstract
Hydrogen is about one of the most important daily need of About 55 to 60% of hydrogen produced
in the world is used in the manufacturing of ammonia. The production of ammonia in Pakistan is
growing day by day due to increase in its demand in fertilizer industry in order for the
manufacturing of urea which is of great necessity for our agriculture sector. Also the use of
hydrogen as a fuel in growing day by day due to its high efficiency and nearly zero carbon emission
as a result of this it is replacing all other fuels. Hydrogen is considered an alternate fuel under
the Energy Policy Act of 1992. The interest in hydrogen as an alternative carrying fuel stems from
its ability to power fuel cells in zero-emission electric vehicles, its potential for local production,
its fast filling time, and the fuel cell's high efficiency. In fact, a fuel cell joined with an electric
motor is two to three times more efficient than an internal combustion engine running on gasoline.
Hydrogen can also work as fuel for internal combustion engines.
The goal of our project is to design an economically feasible and environmental friendly process
for the production of 7.5x106 m3/day of 95% pure Hydrogen by steam reforming of methane. In
designing the process we perform detailed calculations including design of major equipment’s,
cost analysis, instrumentation and process control, hazop study and the conditions that are required
to achieve a 95% of purity. We also make the plant self-efficient to some extent by generation of
steam.
