Whatever its original foundations, as laid down by Germanic tribes, the language was altered and
revised by repeated waves of invaders that crossed the Channel- the Jutes. Saxons, Angles,
Vikings and Normans. Today, English is classified as a member of the Anglo-Frisian group
within the western branch of the Germanic languages, a subfamily of the Indo-European
languages, but more than half of its vocabulary is of Latin origin (e.g. altar, mass, priest, psalm,
temple, pear), implanted for the most part either directly during the permanent Norman conquest,
or indirectly by borrowings from modern French, Spanish and Portuguese (alligator, sombrero),
Italian (cameo, violin). As a result of colonial expansion, notably in North America but also in
other areas of the world, many new words entered the English language.
