Advance Energy Technology

Advanced energy encompasses the technologies and services, both emerging and

established, that are delivering an energy system for the 21st century — one that is

secure, clean, and affordable.

The technologies needed to build a modern, high-performing, and affordable

energy system already exist, and bring with them huge opportunities for businesses to

grow in the U.S. and lead global innovations in energy. The 21st century energy system

made possible by advanced energy is not just a collection of power plants and

transmission lines, automobiles and gas stations, refineries and pipelines. It is a dynamic

and complex assortment of resources, technologies, and services working together to

collectively meet our evolving needs.

The technologies and services in each of these categories deliver a variety of

benefits to our energy system and enable a transformation that will result in reliability,

affordability, consumer choice, and innovation across the board. This transformation is

well underway in every state across the country as utilities, businesses, and customers

embrace the advantages of advanced energy.

Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology

The idea of genetic engineering is something that we associate with the 20th

century. We didn't even know that genes were actually the mechanism of heredity until

the middle of the 20th century. And the direct modification of genes for some purpose

really didn't even start happening until the 1970s. But it's worth noting that human beings

have been, in some ways, influencing the genetics of organisms for a very long time. They

didn't know about the actual genetic code, but it was a form of genetic manipulation

nonetheless. Most agricultural products that we have today are the result of hundreds or

thousands of years of this type of breeding. So even though that might not be the formal

definition of genetic engineering, which typically is referring to something like gene

modification, which we've only been able to do in the last few decades, human beings

have been doing some type of influence on organisms' DNA for a very long time. But with

that said, in the last few decades, we've been able to become more precise with

influencing DNA through genetic engineering. In fact, part of this recombinant DNA,

inserting DNA into something else, it might make it more nutritious. It might provide for

more vitamins. As we have more and more control over the genome, and especially, as

we'll see, the human genome, that is a use of recombinant DNA. And so we really are

going into an interesting period in humanity. Produce new medicines. Produce more

robust crops.

Advance in Medical and Agricultural Technologies

The reporters stressed out the technologies commonly used by the people today

in terms of agriculture and medicine. Based on my own understanding, the effect of

technology in agriculture is Farmers use crop-protection technologies because they

provide cost-effective solutions to pest problems which, if left uncontrolled, would severely

lower yields. As mentioned above, crops such as corn, cotton, and potato have been

successfully transformed through genetic engineering to make a protein that kills certain

insects when they feed on the plants.

The effect of technology in medicine are the new technologies that can cure

diseases. Technologies used in every surgeries and operations were commonly used by

the modern doctors and it is also means higher payments for every surgeries and

operation process which means that only who can afford were the ones that can be saved.

Advances in Construction, Transportation and Space Technologies

From the reports, I can site the difference of structure of construction in years ago

and the present time. Most of the construction were made up of woods and steels but

nowadays they are using advanced materials that strengthens the structure of a specific

building. In the means of transportation, it is obvious, a vast changes occurred from horse

carriages to trains and now high speed automobiles. Satellites, space technology aspect<

is still in use for collecting radars from outer space but then most satellites nowadays

were now advanced because of its modern components.

Advance Materials, Micromachines and Nanotechnology

The reporter sited best examples of these topics for easy understanding. From

the examples, it is clearly highlighted the differences of these three materials.

As what I learned, Advanced Materials are those simple materials or raw materials

in producing to a new useful material such as alloys, polymers etc. Some of our product

nowadays are still made up of these materials like plastic cups. Micro machines and Nano

technology is the latest development of technology. These are small materials having its

great use like micro SD cards for gathering memory of a specific digital phones and

cameras. These materials had been part of human lives.
