CRIME AND CONFLICT SURVEY
Empirical Analysis of Data

INTRODUCTION

Crime and conflict in a nation is a major source of insecurity and fear to the public
welfare and morals of its citizens. Crime has paramount importance to make a
judgment about the quality of life and welfare of any nation. The high Crime rate is a
serious problem in Pakistan with the situation becoming worse every day. Overall
crime in the country is higher than it was two years ago.
We have chosen this topic due to the increasing Crime rate in Pakistan during the last
couple of years. We will study the causes and factors behind this critical issue and
also give some suggestions and recommendations to overcome this problem.

OBJECTIVES:
• Study causes of high crime in Pakistan
• Study the perception of Crime amongst the youth
• Study what youth thinks about Security and Government actions against Crime
• Summarize our findings

SURVEY DESIGN

We designed a 30-question long survey and posted it online to gather Data. The
survey was targeted towards the youth of our society. The survey was divided into
two sections. The first section asked the participants some general information
regarding Crime, i.e. How often do you hear about Crime?
The Second Section asked more serious and critical questions, i.e. What do you think
is the leading Cause of Crime and Conflict in Pakistan?
One of the major limitations of this survey is that it has been limited to only receiving
50 responses.

FINDINGS & RESULTS

It is clear from the survey results that Crime is a serious problem in Pakistan, one that
should no longer be overlooked. Crime in Pakistan is present in various forms. Most
of the participants have been a victim of Crime and almost everyone hears about
crime on a regular basis.

The youth is both the most likely group to commit crime as well as the most
vulnerable to Crime. This leads directly to the cause of crime and conflict in Pakistan.
Almost 40 % of participants think that Politics is the leading cause of crime followed
by Domestic violence and Religious extremism. Most criminals are involved in theft
and/or Drugs and alcohol. Corruption, inequality, and unemployment in Pakistan is
resulting in nation-wide crime and violence. Poverty and greed are the leading
motivation behind most crime events. The media also plays a role in making the
situation even worse by spreading false news and giving an inaccurate representation
of Crime. People around the world always think of Pakistanis as terrorist even though
the statistics show that Pakistan is a safe place to live. The Pakistani nation is
disappointed by the government which is doing nothing for the betterment of the
country. Very few people trust the Criminal Justice system which itself is corrupt.

SUGGESTIONS

Here is a list of possible solutions and suggestions which should be adopted by the
government to reduce the increasing crime rate in Pakistan.
• The Criminal Justice System should be improved and purified from corruption.
• Honest officers in Law maintaining Positions.
• Increase in salaries of Police officers and other security officials.
• More job opportunities for the youth.
• Financial aid to the poor and needy in Pakistan.
• The media should be properly monitored.
• Strict laws against hate speech.

CONCLUSION

There is no single factor that can be specified as the main cause of Crime and
Conflict. Causes of Crime differ from country to country. In the western world, causes
are directly related to the environment and surroundings. In contrast, the causes of
crime in Pakistan are significantly different from western countries. Here in Pakistan,
the main cause of crime is corruption in the law enforcing agencies and political
parties. If corruption is eradicated that major part of the problem will be solved.
Poverty and unemployment almost always lead to crime. It is up to the government
to counter this by providing employment to the unemployed and financial aid to the
needy. Citizens also have very little trust in the justice system and are willing to take
matters into their own hands. Regaining trust will take a lot of time.
In Short Crime in Pakistan can be countered and eliminated if both the Government
and its people unite and fight against it.
