EPS – High Level Architecture
The following are the three main components:
1. User Equipment (UE)
2. Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN)
3. Evolved Packet Core (EPC)

1. User Equipment (UE)
The internal architecture of the user equipment for LTE is identical to the one
used by UMTS and GSM which is actually a Mobile Equipment (ME)
The mobile equipment comprised of the following important modules:
 Mobile Termination (MT)
− Handles all the communication functions
 Terminal Equipment (TE)
− Terminates the data streams
 Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC)
− Also referred to as the SIM card
− Runs an application known as the Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM)
− USIM stores user-specific data very similar to 3G SIM card
− Stores information about the user's phone number, home network identity and security keys
etc.

2. E-UTRAN (Access Network)

© Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 13

2.1 e-NodeB
E-UTRAN handles the radio communications between the mobile and EPC

Has just has one component, the evolved base station, called eNodeB or eNB

Each eNB is a base station that controls the mobiles in one or more cells

Base station that is communicating with a mobile is known as its serving eNB

LTE Mobile communicates with just one base station and one cell at a time

The two main functions supported by eNB are:

 Send and receive radio transmissions to all the mobiles using the analog and digital
signal processing functions of the LTE air interface

 Controls the low-level operation of all its mobiles, by sending them signalling messages
such as handover commands

3. EPC (Core Network)

© Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 16

EPC – Primary Components
3.1 Mobility management entity (MME)
 Controls the high-level operation of the mobile by means of signalling messages and Home
Subscriber Server (HSS)

3.2 Serving gateway (S-GW)

 Acts as a router, and forwards data between the base station and the PDN gateway

3.3 Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway (P-GW)

 Communicates with the outside world
 Each packet data network is identified by an access point name (APN)
 Has the same role as the GPRS support node (GGSN) and the serving GPRS support node (SGSN)
with UMTS and GSM

3.4 Home Subscriber Server (HSS)

 A central database that contains information about all the network operator's subscribers

Logical Architecture & Functional Description

EPS – Logical Architecture
EPS – Physical Architecture
UE Categories or Classes
Category defines the overall performance and the capabilities of the UE
Define the performance specifications that enable base stations to be able to
communicate effectively with them knowing their performance levels
Needed to ensure that the eNB can communicate correctly with the UE
By relaying the LTE UE category information to the base station, it is able to
determine the performance of the UE and communicate with it accordingly
There are 9 different LTE UE categories that are defined

© Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 22

eNodeB – Functions
The eNB is located between the UE and EPC
It processes packet calls by connecting to the UE wirelessly according to the
LTE air standard
The eNB is responsible for:
 Transmission and reception of wireless signals
 Modulation and demodulation of packet traffic signals
 Packet scheduling for efficient utilization of wireless resources
 Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ)/ARQ processing
 Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) for packet header compression, and wireless
resources control

In addition, the eNB performs handover by interworking with the EPC

eNodeB – Function Summary
Radio Resource Management

IP header compression and encryption of user data stream

Selection of an MME at UE attachment when no routing to an MME can

be determined

Routing of user plane data toward serving gateway

Scheduling and transmission of paging messages

Scheduling and transmission of broadcast information and
