What is a Genetic Disorder and how can we Prevent

This paper talks about genetic disorders and explains why people need to change how

they consume food and how they live. People all around the world suffer from down syndrome,

cystic fibrosis, asma, and the list goes on and on. What are all these disorders and abnormalities

due from? Scientist have come up with an answer and that answer is genetics.

Genetic disorders can be inherited from parents who had history with these types of

problems. A genetic disorder is a genetic problem caused by, one or more abnormalities formed

in the genome. But luckily it's rare. One in a thousands to millions could carry a genetic

disorders. You can either get a gene mutation from one or both parents. But it can also happen

during your lifetime. A gene is what holds the DNA of person and it is what makes protein and

maintaining for a cells. But when a mutated gene is inherited for a parent this abnormal gene can

change how the gene works. It make it so the protein does not work properly or it could be is

missing entirely.

There is two types of genetic disorders a single-gene disorder, Chromosomal disorders. A

single- gene disorder is when the there is only one affected gene. A Chromosomal disorders is

when there is missing chromosomes or changed. And lastly a complex disorder in two or more

genes. A single gene disorder is responsible for, “Achondroplasia. Imperfect bone development

causing dwarfism. Marfan syndrome. A connective tissue disorder causing long limbs and heart

defects.” As stated in the article “Types of Genetics,” by Lucile Packard Children's hospital

Stanford. This will only occur when the genes form one of the parents is abnormal, there is a 50

percent chance of the baby inheriting it. A chromosomal disorder cause down syndrome turner

syndrome. Down syndrome is an intellectual disability that affect a person's facial appearance

and gives weak muscle tone. And Turner syndrome is a condition that affects only females, It

affects the height of the person and causes failure of the ovaries to develop and may cause heart

defects.

To reduce the risk of this happening to future generation, according to the National

Human Genome Research Institute, “ you should check regularly for the disease. Follow a

healthy diet. Get regular exercise. Avoid smoking tobacco and too much alcohol. Get specific

genetic testing that can help with diagnosis and treatment. “ You can also look for a professional,

there is a national public health campaign called the “ U.S. Surgeon General's Family History

Initiative. “ There goal is to have all American families learn more about their family health

history.

Conclusion

Genetic defects have caused many problems and our getting wores as time pases, this is why we

need to change how we live and take care of ourselves and be well informed. So we can reduce

the risk of genetic defects in future generations.
