1. Write out the meaning of the following terms: System, control volume, Property,
intensive property, State, Thermodynamic Cycle, and Specific Gravity.
2. A cubic meter of water at room temperature has a weight of 9800 N at a location
where g = 9.80 m/s2. What is its specific weight and its density at a location
where g = 9.77 m/s2?
3. An object whose mass is 10kg weighs 90N. Determine:
(a) The local acceleration of gravity, in m/s2.
(b) The mass, in kg, and the weight, in N, of the object at a location where g=
9.81m/s2.
4. Is iced water a pure substance? Why?
5. Is it possible to have water vapor at -10°C?
6. A perfectly fitting pot and its lid often stick after cooking, and it
becomes very difficult to open the lid when the pot cools down.
Explain why this happens and what you would do to open the lid.
7. A 1.8-m3 rigid tank contains steam at 220°C. One third of the
volume is in the liquid phase and the rest is in the vapor form.
Determine (a) the pressure of the steam, (b) the quality of the
saturated mixture, and (c) the density of the mixture.
1
the temperature is 15°C. Determine (a) the final pressure, (b) the change in the
volume of the cylinder, and (c) the change in the enthalpy of the refrigerant-134a.

Answers:
1. System: - is a quantity of matter or region in space that is chosen for study
2.
4. Yes, since the chemical composition throughout the tank remain the same.
5. Yes, by decreasing the pressure to the minimum value which will give saturated
temperature of -10oC.
6. A perfectly fitting pot and its lid often stick after cooking as a result of the vacuum
created inside as the temperature and thus the corresponding saturation pressure inside
the pan drops. An easy way of removing the lid is to reheat the food. When the
temperature rises to boiling level, the pressure rises to atmospheric value and thus the lid
will come right off.
