A través de este curso se procura brindar una oportunidad de practicar el inglés y, a

la vez, la interpretación de fuentes primarias. A lo largo del curso, se estudia una
serie de fuentes históricas relacionadas con la política exterior de Estados Unidos
hacia América Latina. Empezaremos con unos documentos más bien tradicionales
de índole político, es decir, con la doctrina Monroe y sus interpretaciones a través del
tiempo. Sin embargo, la mayoría del material escogido para el análisis crítico es
producto de una coyuntura particular en las relaciones interamericanas: la Buena
Vecindad de Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-45). Entre otras cosas, la nueva política de
Estado buscó inculcar, en el pueblo estadounidense, una visión más benévola hacia
América Latina, sus habitantes, culturas y civilizaciones, lo que se reflejaba en
ámbitos muy diversos, por ejemplo, en la educación primaria, secundaria y
universitaria, en la programación de las cadenas de radiodifusión, en la producción
de películas de Hollywood, o en el trabajo curatorial de importantes museos de arte.
Por lo tanto, este curso no se limita a documentos clásicos de gobierno, sino enfoca
una gama más amplia de fuentes textuales y audiovisuales con retos interpretativos
muy diversos.

OBJETIVOS
Además de practicar uno de los quehaceres más básicos de la profesión, es decir: la
interpretación crítica de fuentes, se procura robustecer competencias claves para la
investigación y la docencia: entre ellas, el manejo de bases de datos y fuentes
bibliográficas; la presentación clara y sucinta de resultados de investigación y la
redacción concisa de reseñas y demás trabajos escritos. Además, se practica el
trabajo en grupo.

METODOLOGÍA _________________________

Dada la gran variedad y extensión de los tópicos a cubrir, el curso requiere una
participación activa y constante. Cada clase comenzará con el análisis de una(s)
fuente(s) particular(es). Por lo tanto, es importante que todos los participantes
estudien y analicen, para cada clase, las fuentes y demás lecturas obligatorias
indicadas.
Las lecturas obligatorias se encontrarán en Moodle. Una colección de fuentes
históricas útil (HOLDEN y ZOLOV, Latin America and the United States) se
encuentra, además, en la Biblioteca de Posgrados.
A lo largo del semestre, se darán dos parciales (de tipo elección múltiple) en base de
las lecturas obligatorias y de los contenidos expuestos en clase.
En la segunda sesión, se establecen grupos de investigación que se encargarán de
preparar una presentación (de 30 minutos como máximo) relacionada con uno de los
temas especificados en el programa. Las presentaciones servirán como base para la
elaboración de un trabajo final (individual o en grupo) acordado con la docente. A lo
largo del curso se entregarán, además, dos resúmenes de artículos de revistas o
capítulos de libros (en inglés) o, a su vez, una reseña de un (1) libro en ingl
és. Para fines de los resúmenes o reseñas, se recomienda elegir textos relacionados
con la presentación y el trabajo final.

EVALUACIÓN _____
La nota final es el promedio de 6 calificaciones de distinta naturaleza:
1. La presentación en clase (20% de la nota final)
2. Presencia y participación activa (20%).
Aviso: Se hará un control de la asistencia al comienzo de cada clase.
3. Dos exámenes parciales (10% cada uno = 20%)
4. Dos resúmenes de 1.500-2.000 palabras (10% cada una = 20%) o una reseña de
máx. 2500 palabras (20%).
5. Un trabajo final basado en la presentación o previamente acordado con la
docente de 3.000-4.000 palabras (20% de la nota final). Como trabajo de
investigación, incluirá una bibliografía y referencias pormenorizadas indicando los
materiales usados.1
Avisos:
El uso de textos de personas ajenas como si fueran propios sin acreditar la
fuente original (“plagio”) resultará en una nota final de cero.
Entregar tarde los trabajos escritos resultará en una disminución proporcional de
la nota.
