Robert Shuler Smith Proposes Democratic Primary Gubernatorial Debates

JACKSON, MS - Hinds County District Attorney, Robert Shuler Smith, a Democratic

candidate for Governor, is today announcing his proposal that there be formal
Democratic Party debates ahead of the August 6, gubernatorial primary.

“Republicans have already convened a debate at Mississippi State University earlier this
year and I think this election and the issues confronting Mississippi voters demand a
similar exchange among Democratic candidates,” said Smith. “I would like to see the
other eight candidates on the Democratic gubernatorial ballot share a debate stage. A
location in Jackson, MS would make a lot of sense, but I am willing to debate Attorney
General Jim Hood and the other candidates anytime, anywhere.”

A Democratic primary gubernatorial debate has not been staged in Mississippi in recent
memory and this kind of interchange, according to Smith, is fundamental to the
democratic process. “I have a lot of ideas about how to advance Mississippi and I’m
looking forward to debating these issues with my opponents.”
