Assistant Principal
Carlos Lamas has been a student in my AVID (Advancement Via Individual
Miguel Taylor Determination) college readiness elective for the past four years. Not only has

he maintained excellent academic performance in this course but he has

Carlos loves to ask probing questions and to challenge all participants during

argument very beneficial as it requires that students really contemplate their

Sherrie Moore developing his own arguments but he has grown in this academic skill set each

In addition to challenging his peers, Carlos possesses an enthusiasm for a
meaningful learning experience that moves him to engage and collaborate with
his peers effectively. He participates fully, he stands up to increase his level of
engagement, and communicates regarding a task extensively. He prefers
collaborative discourse and brainstorming over independent work. This
preference resulted in him getting behind in his work at times in class. He
overcame this challenge by managing his time and setting aside space to attend
study hall at lunch and after-school. He even sacrificed some days from
baseball practice to attend to his academics. He is committed to academic
excellence and has performed well in a multitude of rigorous honors and
Advanced Placement courses. His demeanor would not suggest that he is
serious about academia but his record speaks for itself having earned honor roll
since 9th grade, excellent course performance, and as shown in his oral
participation.

Carlos’ cool and conscientious personality is a positive contribution to any

environment. He has demonstrated the ability to recognize his weaknesses and
take steps to improve. The direction of his growth and his consistency in doing
so leaves me confident of his future success.
