The function key used for this purpose depends on how the keys are
assigned. F3 is the default key.
Only one Active Diagnostic fault is active in this 3408E engine. Many
times there will be various active faults and status flag indicators shown.
The user can troubleshoot an active fault by highlighting the fault and
pressing the Troubleshoot Code button shown in the lower left corner of
the screen. This will open Diagnostic Advisor, (if Cat ET is running
inside of STW and Diagnostic Advisor is installed) and help the
technician troubleshoot the code.
Active faults cannot be cleared from this screen. An active fault will be
cleared automatically when the fault itself is corrected.

Finally, the function key may be used (depending on how the keys are
assigned), F4 is the default key.
The Active, Logged, and Event Diagnostic screens may be printed or
saved for later viewing or printing as a *.PLR file (see Lesson Four for
more on Printing and Managing Files).
• Number of logged Note the three descriptions on the upper right hand part of the screen;
fault occurrences "Occ. First, and Last". These items describe the number of occurrences,
the hours when the first and last occurrence happened. This feature is
very useful when identifying intermittent faults.

• Clearing logged faults Logged faults can be cleared by using the curser to highlight the message
as shown above on the first item. Press the Enter key or use the Clear
button at the bottom of the screen and confirm the message to delete.
The Include all ECMs box (repeated on the left) at the lower right hand
part of the screen can be selected to display faults on all ECMs connected
to the data link. If it is required to clear all the Logged Fault messages
• Clearing all logged
fault messages and from all ECMs, select Clear All at the bottom of the screen.
• Clearing all logged The screen print above shows 3 ECMs. Since the Caterpillar Monitoring
faults including CMS System is not one of them, CMS on the above machine does not support
communication with ET. Engine, transmission and brake logged faults are
communicated through the data link to CMS. Erasing the faults in Cat ET
will not erase them in CMS since CMS on the above machine does not
communicate with ET. To erase logged faults in CMS that does not
support communication with ET, it is necessary to hook up a 4C-8195
Control Service Tool and use the mode, scroll, and clear switches to
access the service mode and clear the logged faults.

• Logged event screen Logged Events are situations where there may or may not be an electronic
fault, but the engine has operated outside its normal operating parameters.
• Logged events screen
This screen can be accessed using the Logged Events screen icon shown
icon
on the left, using the function key, or using the following drop down
menu:
• Histogram In this case, there are eight events (shown above). If one of them were an
"Engine Overspeed Warning", more information would be available in the
form of a histogram. This information is available by highlighting the
item and selecting the View Histogram button at the lower, left corner of
the screen. If there are no overspeeds present, this button will usually be
gray (not highlighted as shown here).
On the top right hand side of the screen above is additional information.
The number of occurrences is listed, and the hours when the first and last
occurrence happened. For example, in the case of the Low Engine Oil
Pressure Warning; there are 11 occurrences listed, which have happened
between 32 and 33 hours.
Cat Electronic Technician Course 2 - 3 - 15 Module Two
01/04 Lesson Three
• Clearing events Events are not cleared routinely and usually require a factory password
for removal. Clearing an event requires the line to be highlighted, then
press the Enter key or select Clear and enter the information required for
the passwords. Factory passwords will be discussed later in this
presentation.
Normally, the Events should remain in the memory until overhaul time.
The Events provide a record or history of potentially damaging incidents
which can help in performing diagnostics, failure analysis, or providing
evidence of operator abuse. The maximum number of events that an
ECM can store is 255. If this number has been reached, events can be
cleared after the cause has been determined.
• 255 maximum event
count Even though the ECM has logged 255 occurrences, the diagnostic clock
will log the hour when the latest Event occurred.
• Events list Other events which may be seen, depending on the application, are:
- High exhaust temperature
- High aftercooler temperature
- High crankcase pressure
- Loss of coolant flow
- Low (lubrication) oil pressure (according to the oil pressure map)
- User defined shutdown selection
- Fuel filter restriction
- Oil filter restriction
- Low engine oil level
- High or low boost
Cat Electronic Technician Course 2 - 3 - 16 Module Two
01/04 Lesson Three
3-13
• Overspeed histogram The magnitude and number of overspeeds are amplified on the overspeed
histogram of a C-9 Industrial Engine as shown above.
This screen graphically shows the extent of the overspeeds. The vertical
line on the graph shows the number of each category of overspeed. The
horizontal line shows the highest rpm value of each overspeed. The
overspeeds are grouped in 100 rpm increment categories.
In this case there were six overspeeds which peaked at 2500 rpm, three at
2600 rpm, two at 2700 rpm, one at 2800 rpm, and 1 at 2900 rpm.
The range of rpms shown on the screen is determined by the application
ECM. In this case, 2900 is the highest rpm to be measured by the C-9
engine. Other engines may have a different scale depending on the
engine.
• Overspeed damage
In this case, a smaller engine (C-9), it may be assumed that serious
determination damage has been sustained at 2900 rpm. The engine reached potentially
damaging rpms and should be examined for overspeed related damage.
The checks for example, should include; valves, pistons, bearings, and
other moving parts. However with a larger engine such as a 3500, it could
be assumed that damage would have occurred at this rpm due to it's higher
piston speed.

indicator boxes across the top of the screen. These contain current active
conditions, for example, the Cold Mode is seen above. Some other
indicator flags that could be displayed are as follows:
3-16
• Zoom in/out control There will be times when working on the vehicle that the numbers must
be read from a distance. In this case, the Zoom In feature was selected
and the numbers are enlarged for clarity. Using the Zoom Out
button (arrow) restores the the screen to its original size.
• Hold control The Hold feature will lock in the readings for analysis. For example,
during a torque stall test.
Selecting and customizing the Status Screens is a vital part of Cat ET. For
example, if it is required to perform a torque stall test for low power on a
793 truck, there are a number of items which need to be checked
simultaneously. The only practical way to do this is to customize a
screen, with all necessary parameters. A new screen can be created, or an
existing screen can be modified and saved for future use.
• New screen creation To create a new screen, click the Groups button in the lower left hand
corner of the screen and then press the New button with the mouse. The
screen shown on the following page is the New Group Screen.

• Status screen If it is necessary to check for low power, the items most likely to be
parameter selection checked will be selected from the screen. For example:
1. Engine speed
2. Desired engine speed
3. Throttle position
4. Atmospheric Pressure
5. Boost Pressure
6. Air Filter Restriction
7. AFRC Fuel Limit (air fuel ratio control)
8. Fuel Position
9. Rated Fuel Limit
10. Engine Coolant Temperature
• Saving the status If OK is selected, this will be a "Temporary Group" and will only be
screen saved until the Status Screen is exited (it is then deleted). However, a
screen will ask the user if they want to save the screen as a specific name
or leave it as a temporary screen. When the desired parameters are
selected, the Save As button is clicked.

• Saving the screen The customized screen should be given a name in the "Enter Group
Name" box. Click OK to save the screen for future use.
• Creating two screens If more than 10 parameters are desired, a second screen may be created.
for one test The user can toggle back and forth between these two screens.
• Naming the screens If two screens are created for the same test, it is suggested that titles such
the following be used:
3-19
• Reconfigured screen The illustration above is the (newly created) reconfigured screen (with the
engine running).
Notice the screen title, "Low Power Test", on the top left hand side of the
status screen box.
• Hold function The Hold button can be used to freeze the screen. The Hold button will
be replaced by the Resume button which is used to return to the dynamic
screen.
The advantage of this function is that it allows test readings in the field,
for example, torque stall test readings can be frozen using the Hold
function and viewed or saved to a file. This information can then be
printed or viewed at another time. The paper copy can be used as a base
line for future tests and comparisons.
• Active codes The Active Codes button at the bottom of the screen is used to view the
active faults/codes for the current ECM.

It should still be 0 if the engine is started but has no load.
_________________________________________________________________
Temperature sensors should read ambient temperatures (if the simulator or engine has not been
running).
This is important to check if temperatures are high or low for fuel temperature especially. If some
wires are reversed, there could be no active fault on the sensor, and the ECM may have an
incorrect input. Fuel temperature compensation could be turned off automatically if the sensor
incorrectly shows above 194°F degrees. This could cause a driver to complain of low power.
