ABSTRACT

The purpose of this project was to implement our engineering skills to a actual
project work. This project is done with the view to meet the need of the farmers,
taking into considerations their problems, and manufacturing a multi purpose
tool. This multi purpose tool will try to meet their needs in domestic life as well
as agricultural life. By using this tool, they can do their job faster and more
efficiently, and thus can deploy the time to do other work from where they can
generate revenue. We are using a single phase induction motor to do various
applications such as mixer and grinder, wood cutting, abrasive grinding, Flour
mill, rope making, rice separation, separating onion from tail and number of
operations can be done where motor is used. All the operations can be
performed on single tool. The focus here is to make ample use of the technology
for the better understanding and to some amount meeting the needs of the
farmers.

Keywords: Farmers need, multipurpose tool, mixer and grinder, wood cutting,
abrasive grinding, Flour mill, rope making, rice separation, separating onion
from tail.

SYNOPSIS

1. FARMERS NEED

In Praise of Our Founding Farmers Need and Growing Urban Agriculture.

We like nothing more than to ride our bicycles to a local neighborhood or farmers
market and buy local.

One anti-farmers market talking point is summarized in the phrase “The Farmers
Needs.” We heard this talking point in several different refrains: “We need to protect
our investment at The Farmers Market” or “I won’t support anything that will harm
The Farmers Market.” Underneath all of the blatant protectionism and favoritism,
rests an important assumption that should be challenged.

First, we should all praise this small founding population of urban farmers markets.
Urban agriculture is more than a single, centralized farmers market. It is the
integration of sustainable food production and distribution throughout our built
environment. We must understand, whether we are discussing farmers needs and we
should be grateful for the opportunities presented.

Second, we should be encouraging our farmers markets to thrive. In fact, instead of

spending countless hours studying how to regulate the existing farmers needs, our
time would be better spent understanding what will make this small founding
population survive and multiply.

Today, India ranks second worldwide in farm output. Agriculture and allied sectors
like forestry and logging accounted for 16.6% of the GDP in 2007, employed 52% of
the total workforce and despite a steady decline of its share in the GDP, is still the
largest economic sector and plays a significant role in the overall socio-economic
development of India.

Slow agricultural growth is a concern for policymakers as some two-thirds of India’s

people depend on rural employment for a living. Current agricultural practices are
neither economically nor environmentally sustainable and India's yields for many
agricultural commodities are low. Poorly maintained irrigation systems and almost
universal lack of good extension services are among the factors responsible. Farmers'
access to markets is hampered by poor roads, rudimentary market infrastructure,
excessive regulation and time consumption in other activities which could be done in
less time ,less effort and more output with our multipurpose machine.

The low productivity in India is a result of the following factors:

• According to World Bank, Indian Branch: Priorities for Agriculture and Rural
Development", India's large agricultural subsidies are hampering productivity-
enhancing investment. Overregulation of agriculture has increased costs, price
5
risks and uncertainty. Government intervenes in labour, land, and credit
markets. India has inadequate infrastructure and services. World Bank also
says that the allocation of water is inefficient, unsustainable and inequitable.
The irrigation infrastructure is deteriorating. The overuse of water is currently
being covered by over pumping aquifers, but as these are falling by foot of
groundwater each year, this is a limited resource
• Inconsistent government policy. Agricultural subsidies and taxes often
changed without notice for short term political ends.
• The average size of land holdings is very small (less than 20,000 m²) and is
subject to fragmentation, due to land ceiling acts and in some cases, family
disputes. Such small holdings are often over-manned, resulting in disguised
unemployment and low productivity of labour.
• Adoption of modern agricultural practices and use of technology is
inadequate, hampered by ignorance of such practices, high costs and
impracticality in the case of small land holdings.
• A good monsoon results in a robust growth for the economy as a whole.

2. OBJECTIVES

Taking all these problems of the landson into consideration, we have

planned to manufacture a multipurpose machine. This machine is for the farmers
domestic use which could be used for day to day activities hence saving time which
could be deployed at other work.

Our project is based on single motor, and using this single motor we had
planned to do number of applications with different mechanical arrangements which
would be helpful for the agricultural as well as domestic purpose.

Initially, the idea erupted as to generate electricity on bicycle and use the same for
different applications. But we were unable to generate that much amount of power
which was required for different applications. Lately, after the survey we found that
now-a-day almost 70% of the villages are well equipped with the electricity. So the
idea of generation of the electricity was dropped out. Then we further decided why
not to use available electricity and motor to do the various applications.

3. WORKING MODEL

Cutting Operation Wood Cutter

Grinding Wheel Rope Mechanism.

7
Manual Threshing. Flour Mill.

4. OPERATIONS TO BE PERFORMED ON TOOL:

• Mixer and Grinder

• Wood Cutting for domestic purpose.
• Abrasive grinding.
• Flour Mill.
• Rope Making.
• Rice grain separation.
• Separating Onion from Tail.

All the above applications will be running on single phase 1.5HP Induction
motor with different mechanical arrangements. The motor is provided with
regulator to vary the speed according to the requirement of the applications.

5. METHODOLOGY OF OPERATIONS.

• Mixer and Grinder: Mostly in villages, there is no provision for the mixer
grinder and still they use traditional methods. So we have planned to run the
mixer and grinder with Bevel gear arrangement and bearing. The bevel gear
will be mounted on the design shaft which will be connected to the motor
shaft by means of clutch.

• Wood cutting for domestic purpose: Wood is used as fuel in villages as well
as for other applications. This wood cutting requires lot of human efforts and
time consuming. So we will decide to use cutter for wood cutting which will
reduce human efforts and time. We will use Carbide tipped Circular saw blade
with arrangement on the designed shaft which is connected to the motor shaft
through clutch.

• Abrasive grinding: There are few tools which need to sharpened regularly for
the agricultural purpose. They get it sharpened from the other source where
they pay money. So we are installing a abrasive wheel for sharpening purpose.

8
• Flour Mill: In most villages people still prefer to use circular grinding stone
or they get flour of rise, wheat from flour mills. The circular stone requires
more effort and getting the work done from outside requires money. So to
save effort and money we have

Designed a new way where flouring can be done at home itself saving time and
money.

• Rope Making: Various length ropes are required for agricultural purpose. So
we can make rope with our machine so that the farmer is no more dependent
on market.

• Rice Grain Separation: After cutting the crops, the grain separation is
carried out. The traditional way of separating grains is to strike the crops on
the wooden block. But we are using same mechanism but instead of farmer
giving the blow here machine is used for grain separation.

• Separating Onion from tail: To separate onion from tail, numbers of

workers are required which to do work with knife which requires time, efforts
and it is costly. By installing cutter on this tool, output (separating speed) is
increased with less number of workers.

6. ACCESSORIES:

• Single phase Induction motor 1.5 HP with speed regulator.

• Designed shaft
• Bevel gear.
• Abrasive wheel
• Carbide tipped circular saw blade.
• Rope making hooks.
• Clutch
• Ball Bearing
• Flour mill blade.
• Rice separation drum.
• Electric panel.

9
CONCLUSION:
The culmination of this project is indeed the stepping stone in the life of a student.
This project will give us the throw idea about how we come across difficulties in the
practical field. It will also give us confidence to tackle the problem.

We would like to conclude that we take this opportunity as engineering students

through this project to do a bit for the farmers by implementing our technical,
analytical and practical knowledge. Our project “Farmers Multi Purpose Tool” will
help the farmers not only in his domestic life but also in agricultural activities.
