„Opening up like a pop-up book from the Rio Douro at sunset, humble-yet-opulent Porto entices
with its higgledy-piggledy medieval centre, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals“ –
LONELY PLANET

Introduction
In 2014 and 2017, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European
Destinations Agency - europeanbestdestinations.org.

On the 5th of July we are finally heading off to one of the most beautiful and truly fascinating
cities in Portugal – Porto. Porto has about 2.4 million inhabitants, only in the urban area of
the city (150 sq miles). It is the second largest urban area in Portugal (Lisbon being the
largest) and a number one tourism attraction, especially during the warm summer month.
The weather conditions during our stay are expected to be fabulous and therefore we will
make the most of it. Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one
of the oldest European centres. We will have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful sunsets at
the river before enjoying the old town and its charm at night. The historical core of Porto has
been proclaimed a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban
area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. A short travel will allow us to catch a few
waves on the Atlantic Ocean before enjoying a “lunch with a view”. We are making sure YOU
will get the best out of the trip by seeing unique spots, experiencing the culture as well as
the taste of it. In fact, a Portuguese export wine is even named after Porto (due to its
responsibility for the export, packaging etc.) which we will not miss out to enjoy. Look
forward to an unforgettable trip that will not only allow you to experience a new culture, but
also a uniqueness of our honours community. Besides fun, entertaining, challenging and
sportive activities, there will be plenty of time to connect and exchange with other honours
students. We are looking forward to a great trip with great people! Join in 

„Porto is a city on the rise, tempting travellers

with its pretty old town, excellent wine bars and
golden rooftops. This isn’t a destination for those
who want up-to-the-minute cool – this is the spot
for long, seafood dinners, slow strolls through
sleepy streets and a white port and tonic as the
sun sets. It’s traditional Portugal at its finest,
without the crowds of Lisbon or the tackiness of
the Algarve.“ – INDEPENDENT, Brady Nicola

Public Transportation in Porto

In Porto people work with the Andante card, it’s like the OV-chipkaart we know from the
Netherlands. This is an rechargeable card. At the station of depart you’ll have to check in and
also when you change lines you’ll have to validate your card. Here are some facts about the
public transport in Porto:

- Make sure you check in, the fines are more expensive than in the Netherlands: €95,-!
- The system of public transport works with zones you’ll travel in/trough
- It also works with time of travelling, the zones are expiring after an given amount of
time
- It doesn’t matter where you’re travelling to, if it’s in the zone within the given time
you’ll pay always the same price.
- The prices of an andante card is €0,60, in Holland you pay for an OV-chipkaart €7,50
- Aeroporto → São Bento takes 4 zones (referred as Z4)

Do you want to know more about the public transport? Visit the website of Metro do Porto
(https://en.metrodoporto.pt/).

The Estádio do Dragão (Dragon Stadium) is an all-seater

footballstadium located in Porto, Portugal, and the current
home ground of Futebol Clube do Porto. It has a capacity of
50,033, making it the third largest football ground in
Portugal.
Designed by Portuguese architect Manuel Salgado, the
stadium was built to replace Porto's previous ground, the
Estádio das Antas, and was inaugurated on 16 November
2003 with a friendly match against Barcelona, which set an
attendance record of 52,000 spectators. A UEFA category
four stadium, it hosted UEFA Euro 2004 matches, including
the opening, and has held several other international club
competition and national team matches. It has also served as
a concert venue to international musical artists, such as
Coldplay, Muse and The Rolling Stones.

With 74 awards it’s the best club in Portugal, Fc Porto has won the league title 24 times,
only Benfica has won more titles (34). Last year Fc Porto also won the league of Portugal.

Fc Porto Stadium tour

We are going to visit the Fc Porto stadium and have an museum tour and stadium tour. It will
be an interactive tour. The tours are non-guided, but the views will absolutely be awesome!

The Douro is one of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, flowing from its source near
Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province across northern-central Spain and Portugal to its outlet
at Porto.

Culture and economy

These reaches of the Douro have a microclimate allowing for cultivation of olives, almonds,
and especially grapes, which are important for making the famous Port wine. The region
around Pinhão and São João da Pesqueira is considered to be the centre of Port wine, with its
quintas (or farms/estates) that extend along the steep slopes of the river valleys. In the 21st
century, many of these quintas are owned by multinational wine companies.
Recently, a prosperous tourist industry has developed based on river excursions from Porto
to points along the Upper Douro valley.
The Douro railway line (in Portuguese: Linha do Douro) was completed in 1887; it connects
Porto, Rio Tinto, Ermesinde, Valongo, Paredes, Penafiel, Livração, Marco de Canaveses, Régua,
Tua and Pocinho. Pocinho is near the city of Foz Côa, which is close to Côa Valley Paleolithic
Art site. This is considered important to the archaeological pre-historic patrimony, and it has
been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wine tasting
As you guys know the wine tasting is a luxury, so it’s optional and at your own costs. The wine
tasting will be in Porto Harbour, starting after our dinner.

So after the dinner on saturday we’ll split up in two groups: the wine tasting and the ones who
won’t do the wine tasting. The people in the second group will make a walk through Porto
Harbour and drink some beers () somewhere else.

More activities

Surfing
We’re going to surf in Porto! We’ll have 2 hours of surf lessons and afterwards we have a lunch
at the beach and stay there for the afternoon. We also arranged the organisation will pick us
up and drops us off at the hostel. The organisation we’re surfing with is:

Academia do Mar - Surfschool

www.academiadomar.com

The surf school will provide us with a surfboard and wetsuit, you don’t have to bring your own.

Assessments
Some of us will have their assessments in Porto. There are some moments in the programm
available for having your assessment with your coach:
- Friday 13:00 - 14:30 (after the city tour)
- Saturday 13:00 - 16:00 (have an assessment on the beach, how cool is that?)
- Sunday almost the whole day is available (not during the picnic please)

Dinner groups
We'll have 4 dinners in the city. In order to prevent discussing all night where to eat, we have
made 4 dinner groups, the persons in this group will decide where we'll eat with the whole
group that night. So the dinner group 1 will decide where we'll eat the first evening, and so
on.

When you want to visit something outside walking distance, it’s possible to get your Andante
