Significant Weather Features

♦ The depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with speed of 11 kmph during past 06 hours and
lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of today, the 13th December 2018 over southeast Bay of Bengal near Latitude 7.3°N and
Longitude 88.2°E, about 780 km southeast of Trincomalee ( Sri Lanka), 1080 km south-southeast of Chennai (Tamilnadu) and
1250 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression in next
12 hours and into a Cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards towards Andhra
Pradesh & adjoining north Tamilnadu coasts during next 72 hours.
♦ The western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km mean sea level roughly along
Long. 75°E to the north of Lat. 30°N persists. Under its influence, isolated to scattered precipitation likely over westren
Himalayan region during next 24 hours. Due to approaching a fresh feeble western disturbance over westren Himalayan region,
no significant change in minimum temperature likely over most parts of northwest India during next 3 days.
♦ Shallow to moderate with dense fog observed at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, north
Rajasthan, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh and northwest Madhya Pradesh in the morning hours.

Main Weather Observations


♦ Rainfall observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hrs IST of today): Rain/snow observed at many places over Jammu &
Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and at a few places over Uttarakhand. Rain/ thundershowers observed at most places over
Andaman & Nicobar Islands and at isolated places over Telangana.
♦ Rainfall recorded at 1730 hrs IST of today (1 cm & more) are: Car Nicobar-4, Ramgundam, Mayabander, Long Islands and
Nancowry-1 each.
♦ Maximum temperature departures as on 13-12-2018: Maximum temperatures are above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most
places over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and Rayalaseema; at many places over Gangetic
West Bengal, Jharkhand and interior Karnataka; at a few places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Coastal Andhra
Pradesh and Lakshadweep; at isolated places over Telangana and Kerala. They are markedly below normal (-5.0°C or less) at
many places over Jammu & Kashmir and at a few places over Himachal Pradesh; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to
-5.0°C) at most places over Rajasthan; at many places over Uttarakhand and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi ; at a few places
over Chhattisgarh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Gujarat State, West Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar
Pradesh, and Punjab; at many places over East Uttar Pradesh; at a few places over Odisha and Andaman & Nicobar Islands
and at isolated places over Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Coastal Karnataka and near normal over rest of the
country. Today, the highest maximum temperature of 34.6°C recorded at Karwar (Coastal Karnataka) over the country.
♦ Minimum temperature departures as on 13-12-2018: Minimum temperatures are markedly above normal (5.1°C or
more) at isolated places over Telangana; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolated places over Vidarbha,
interior Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Chhattisgarh; at many places
over Haryana & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand , Vidarbha and Kerala; at a few places over Madhya Pradesh, rest
Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Saurashtra & Kutch and Tamilnadu & Puducherry; at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir,
Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, East Rajasthan, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema. They are below normal (-
1.6°C to -3.0°C) at isolated places over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Coastal Karnataka and near normal over rest
of the country. Today the lowest minimum temperature of 5.8°C recorded at Churu (East Rajasthan) over the plains of the
country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 1730 hours IST)
♦ The depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with speed of 11 kmph
during past 06 hours and lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of today, the 13th December 2018 over southeast
Bay of Bengal near Latitude 7.3°N and Longitude 88.2°E, about 780 km southeast of Trincomalee ( Sri
Lanka), 1080 km south-southeast of Chennai (Tamilnadu) and 1250 km south-southeast of
Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression in next 12

km mean sea level roughly along Long. 65°E to the north of Lat. 30°N persists.
♦ The cyclonic circulation over North Interior Karnataka & neighbourhood extending upto 0.9 km
above mean sea level persists. The trough from this system to south Chhattisgarh across Telangana and
Vidarbha extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.
♦ The cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh & neighbourhood extending upto 2.1 km above mean sea
level persists.
Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 18h December 2018
♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table -1.
♦ Shallow to moderate fog at isolated places in morning hours very likely over north Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattishgarh
and Vidarbha during next 2 days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram &
Tripura during next 4 days.
♦ Minimum temperatures very likely to fall by 2-4°C over Uttar Pradesh during next 2 days. No significant change in
minimum temperatures likely over rest parts of the country during next 3-4 days.

Weather Outlook for subsequent 2 days from 18th December to 20th December 2018
♦ Isolated to scattered rainfall activity is likely over northeast India; scattered to fairly over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and
isolated over south Peninsular India.
♦ A feeble westren disturbance likely to affect westren Himalayan region.
♦ Dry weather likely over the rest of the country.

14 December (Day 2): ♦ Dense fog at isolated places is very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and

15 December (Day 3): ♦ Heavy heavy rain at isolated places likely over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north coastal Tamilnadu.
♦ Gale wind wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph is likely over southwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal. Sea
condition likely to be very rough to high. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.
♦ Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along & off Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north
Tamilnadu & Puducherry coasts from morning.
16 December (Day 4): ♦ Heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places likely over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy over north
coastal Tamilnadu.
♦ Gale wind wind speed reaching 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph likely over westcentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. Sea
condition likely to be very rough to high. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.
♦ Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph likely prevail along & off Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamilnadu &
Puducherry coasts.
