Grade 2 Mathematics Overview

Students will...
➔ Understand that the 3-digits in a 3-digit number stand
Unit 1 for hundreds, tens, and ones.
➔ Understand that 100 is made up of 10 tens.
➔ Model various representations of hundreds using place
value manipulatives.
➔ skip count by 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s, starting at multiples of
5, 10, and 100 to determine patterns, working towards
mentally adding and subtracting 10 and 100 from any
number.
➔ Read and write numbers to 500 using base ten
numerals, number names, and expanded form to justify
representations.
➔ Apply place value knowledge, using the comparing
symbols: <, >, = to make comparisons with two numbers
up to 500.

➔ use addition and subtraction counting strategies
Unit 2 (plus/minus 0, 1, 2 and make/break apart 10, and
doubles/halving) working towards fluency within 20.
➔ Develop an understanding of even and odd numbers

Unit 4 numerals, number names and expanded form to justify
representations.
➔ Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of
the hundred, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and <
symbols to record the results of comparisons.
➔ Skip count by 5’s , 10’s, and 100’s,starting at any multiple
of 5, 10, and 100, within 1,000 to determine patterns.
➔ Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an
odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects
or counting them by 2s and write an equation to express
an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
➔ Identify coins (quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies),
applying skip counting strategies to determine the value
of a mixed set of coins up to a $1 in real life situations.

➔ Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given 3-digit number and
mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given 3-digit number.
➔ Use various models to show, reason, and explain applied
strategies based on place value and the properties of
operations when adding and subtracting within 100.

➔ Explore and use appropriate measuring tools to estimate
Unit 6 and measure the length of objects (inches and feet ) to
compare the differences in lengths with the same unit.
➔ Measure an object with both inches and feet, describe
how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit
chosen.
➔ Use real-life situations involving lengths in inches and
feet to build on their conceptual understanding with
finding length differences through addition and
subtraction (within 100).
