EPISODE 1
THE TEACHER AS A PERSON
1. Why are some teachers reported to have bumped a learner’s head on the
wall or made a child swallow scratch paper or pencil filings. What attribute
do you think is low for this teacher?

Henry Adams once articulated “A teacher affects eternity; no

one knows when his influence stops”. This quotation flashed back a
memory about my previous teacher who had hurt one of my
classmates and put her on a spotlight of embarrassment because of
not being able to answer his questions. Knowing that being a teacher
requires great compassion and patience, why did he enter the
teaching arena, if in the very first place, he doesn’t know how to
control his anger?
As a result of this teacher’s uncaring action, my classmate
hated schooling, until a day came when he was never seen in the
classroom…again. What an upsetting action! Is this the influence he
wants his students to inculcate in the innermost recesses of their
minds? Are these the memories he wants his students to remember
for the rest of their lives?
Luckily, this episode removed those nebulous questions on my
mind about those teachers who are doing unsympathetic actions
towards their students. I’ve come to learn that this is all because of
their lacking emotional stability in which, teachers with this behavior
are more impulsive and often encounters an augmented risk of
responding with aggressive and detrimental behaviors to his students
This dangerous thing, if not addressed will not only ruin the
professional life of the teacher but will also destroy his or her students’
life. They say that books can teach, but only personality can
educate. However, how can someone educate if the teacher who is
the model to be followed lacks character and personality.
Therefore, I as a future teacher, in the long and arduous years
of my making, must do all the possible ways to become competent
and emotionally mature because this will serve as a portal in
performing my mission towards the students effectively.
2. Why do you think some teachers are better loved by their students?
Compassion, the heart of teaching. Possessing this very vital
attribute is the very reason why some teachers are better loved by
their students. Compassion of a teacher means having a happy
disposition in life, knowing how to appreciate students, knowing the
value of voluntarism and most essentially, knowing when to put their
feet on the shoes of the students.
A teacher who knows how to empathize with the students,
respect them and believe that each has something special that can
be built upon will absolutely build a positive and strong relationship
and rapport towards the students. He must know how to inspire his
students to follow their dreams, discover their creativity, interest and
talents and learn to use their fullest potentials. A teacher with
compassion is the reason why ordinary students dream to do
extraordinary things.

3. If you were to choose, which personal attributes should all teachers

possess? Why?
A puzzle, in order to see its beauty, in order to know its purpose
must be completed by pieces. The absence of one will ruin the
image of the puzzle. And so with a teacher. A teacher is like the
whole puzzle and the puzzle pieces represent the personal attribute a
teacher must possess. Intelligence, emotional stability,
resourcefulness, compassion, buoyancy, objectiveness, self-
motivation, self-confidence, pleasantness, refinement,
cooperativeness and reliability-this are the vital pieces that will make
a teacher- a teacher not only by name, not only by profession but a
teacher by heart, by vocation and by mission. And this I must put in
mind! The absence of even just one attribute will surely affect not
only my image as a teacher but also in performing effectively my
obligations towards the students.
Teaching as I perceive, doesn’t only mean filling the learners
minds, it’s not only about showering them with uncounted
information on the rules of grammar and mathematics or
bombarding them with scientific formulas. It is about touching their
hearts and shaping their lives because as they say “They may forget
what you have said, but they will never forget how you made them
feel.
Episode 2
The Teacher’s Philosophy of Education

Based on your experience and the actions of the teacher you have observed,
how important is your philosophy of education to your future career as a
teacher? How would your experiences and observations contribute to your
becoming a teacher?

Why do I teach? What is worth teaching? How should I teach these

things that are worth knowing? These are just but bunch of questions that
are bothering my mind the fact that I am still not in the actual scenario of
teaching. Luckily, this episode provided me all the needed answers. Believe
it or not? Believe it!
Teaching as a profession is grounded on some philosophical beliefs.
And this I was able to fathom and grasp. I, as a teacher must not set my
feet on the teaching sphere with my empty bag alone. I must bring along
with me set of beliefs because I am certain that these are the answers to
my numerous questions about the purpose of education as well my role in
the school and society.
Asking the importance of philosophy of education to the teaching
profession is likely asking which path I should take? Which direction shall I
follow and which threshold should I open? Undeniably, this episode made
me reckon that philosophy on education is extremely crucial. Through it, I
was enlightened on what way I must trail when I will be on the field of
teaching. It had helped me to examine my educational goals and reflect
on my life experiences both personally and professionally. This deepened
my understanding of philosophical orientations that will surely make me
become better and effective teacher in the future.
This episode had helped me ascertain that my goal is to simply teach
from the heart while allowing students to unfold into their own experience.
My purpose as a teacher is not only to fill the minds of students with facts. . .
it is to teach them to think. I wll inspire, I will ignite the imagination and instill
a love of learning. I will facilitate thinking, I will engage their minds, I will
listen to question, I will encourage risk, I will support, I will cultivate dreams.
This will be my philosophy that will serve as my compass in hurdling the
teaching arena.
Episode 3
A Teacher in a School Setting
Based on the teacher’s program, your observations and your interviews,
would you see now teaching to be a full time job? Why? Why not?

Teaching entails great sacrifices. The moment you step your feet on
the teaching arena means you have already carried the weight of the
world in your shoulders. Teaching means not giving only a part of you in
your job but the whole you. Imagine spending your whole day dealing with
students, lesson plans and colleagues. Imagine burning the midnight oil and
sleeping late at night just to finish your lesson plans and checking students’
papers. Imagine opening your own pocket in order to have visual aids just
to ensure that students’ needs are effectively catered. Imagine eating your
lunch while running to the photo copy machines. Imagine giving up your
time for your family just to attend seminars and workshops. With these, who
says teaching is not a full time job?

How do you feel about the teacher’s workplace? Are the conditions healthy
for the welfare of both the learners and the teacher?

Students and teachers spend most of their time in the classroom.

Classroom therefore serves as a second home to the student. Thus, a
teacher, who now functions as a second mother to these children must
ensure that they will feel safe, secured and sheltered in their home.
Creating a conducive physical leaning environment is one of the most
important things a teacher can do in order to effectively perform his
obligation towards the students.

And indeed, the teacher was able to perform these obligations

because as far as we have observed, the learning environment is
conducive for learning. The displays and decorations enlivened the room,
the enough spaces provided a comfortable atmosphere, furnitures were
palced rightly and lastly, it was well-lighted and well-ventilated.
Do you find the relationship of the teachers and the learners pleasant?
Explain your answer.

With the teacher’s noticeable compassion towards the students, with

her caring attitude, with the students’ intimacy to her, it is then very
explicable that the students and the teachers have pleasant relationship.
Having interviewed a student asking their relationship towards the
teacher, with all his heart he answered that he found guidance, friendship,
discipline and learning, everything in one person, and that was his teacher.
The learning environment will dictate how well or how poor a child
will learn. I, as a future educator have the primary responsibility to assure
that no child ever feels like they are not worthy contributors in the
classroom. Each child must feel a sense of belonging within the classroom.
Learning is not merely the absorption of material by the students. It is a
combination of many factors-classroom layout, a child centered class
room, positive behavior management techniques, a safe learning
environment, lack of bias, cultural sensitivity, the ability to draw out each
child’s special talent to make them feel like worthy contributors .
Episode 4
The Teacher in the Community
Make a short narrative below describing the data which you gathered.
Present 1-2 pictures of the community or barangay in your photo essay

Barangay Cataggaman
The School’s Community

Make a narrative report on the interview that you have done with the
teacher.
Learning does not begin when children walk through the
school doors nor does it end when they exit for the day. It takes place all
the time and everywhere throughout life. Children bring to school their
family and community beliefs, practices, knowledge, expectations and
behaviors. Similarly, when they return from school, they bring back to their
homes and communities new forms of knowledge, practices, behaviors,
attitudes and skills. Children are engaged in a continuous, dynamic process
of bridging the world of school and the world of home and the community.
They learn from both worlds facilitated by teachers, family members,
neighbors and others. Therefore, if teachers want the learning of the
students to be wholesome, he must know how to link and build the
relationship of the school and the community. These are the learnings we
have learned from the teacher interviewed
Cataggaman National High School, a school known for its
competence in local and even national activities, cannot achieve all its
progresses and improvements if not with the assistance of the Barangay
officials and other community members. This is again according to the
teacher we have interviewed. Through financial assistance, free services in
maintaining a safe school environment and participation with the different
school events, the school and the community are building a strong rapport
towards each other. Additionally, community facilities and tools were freely
utilize by the teachers to ensure that the learning needs of the students
were effectively catered.
Naming it, the teacher-community-parent relationship is a give and
take process. Both are willing to share information as well as responsibilities
to the best interest of the students. Parents and the community are ready to
offer much-needed assistance in terms of resources while teachers are
equally committed to spend time, effort and expertise in serving the
students.

Truly, a well-developed community relation skills are necessary

component for the teacher, and the school as a whole, is responding to
the needs of students.

School-Community Collaboration
View of a teacher

A favorable partnership between the school and the community will

yield bountiful harvest. Hence, it is a must to establish a strong relationship
between the school and community because this will definitely create an
impact on the lives of the students. This is just but one learning gained from
this study given to us by the teacher interviewed.
According to her, teachers and the community can establish a close
relationship that can pave way towards attaining a more progressive and
strengthened community and school. To support this, she gave an
example. In beautifying the community, like tree planting activities,
Barangay officials often request the teachers to mandate the students’
participation in order to make the work faster and easier. On the other
hand, barangay officials were often requested to help in repairing school
facilities for free. Obviously, it is a give and take relationship.
To effectively make the partnership strong, teachers and
administrators must consider many factors, she added. This includes
determining community expectations of the school, communicating with
the parents through the media and in group conferences, planning and
coordinating the visits of school people to homes of students, informing
people living near the school about the events of the school and lastly
appraising school-community relations.

After making a survey of the Barangay and interviewing the teacher,

answer the following questions and reflect on it

Which resources that you have identified are present in the community?
Can these be utilize in your teaching? How?
Learning does not occur mainly in the four corners of the room. the
community, equipped with facilities and tools can be utilized to ensure
lifelong learning. this are the following facilities, tools and resources that can
be utilized in the teaching.

Health Center
Equipped with the different diagrams and miniatures on the
development of a fetus a child inside the mother’s womb, a science
teacher can utilize this to demonstrate and discussed properly about the
topic about formation of the child.

ICT tools
The community was equipped with televisions, speakers and even
wireless connections, vital equipment that can be used by the school for
educational purposes like watching educational movies, browsing
information and other academic activities.

From the surveys and interviews, I was able to . . .

Realize that teaching is not teaching unless teachers make a big
difference in the lives of the students and the community as a whole. The
responsibility of a teacher is not only limited within the four corners of the
room because making a difference in the lives of the community members
is also on their shoulders. There is no other profession in this world as
influential in shaping the minds and characters of the people except
teaching. There is no other profession that can equal the role of teachers in
shaping lives and touching the future.
Episode 5
The Global Teacher
Indeed, becoming a global teacher requires certain standards. As
observed, there are more similar expectations of teachers, the world over.
As a pre-service teacher education students, how do you see yourself, ten
years from now vis a vis the other teachers from all over the world?

Ten years from now, I must already have a deep and principled
understanding of the learning processes as well us understanding the
educational processes of different countries as related to historical, social,
cultural and political processes. I must already have a meaningful and
comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter that I will teach. I must
have the expertise in dealing with diverse types of learners in diverse type of
learning environments, using a wide range of teaching knowledge and
skills. Possessing all these will definitely qualify me to become a global
teacher, and this I must attain!

Can you meet the challenges of being a global teacher?

The roadmap to becoming a global teacher is long and tedious. You

need to hurdle every step on the way to reach it. However with enough
perseverance and efforts to meet the standard of a global teacher, I will be
able to make it. In the long years of preparation, I must ensure that the
seed of professionalism was already planted, cultivated and nourished in
the innermost niche of my heart and mind. Through formal training on
teaching skills, pedagogical approaches and professional skills, I will be a
“made global teacher”
Episode 6
The Teacher as a Professional
Considering that you will be a professional teacher, what standard behavior should
you uphold based on the Code of Ethics for Professional Teacher

Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers- a blueprint that defines the

vision of professional practice of teaching in the country. A system that motivates
teachers to uphold honor and dignity of the teaching profession. A code of
conduct that determines the ethical responsibilities and commitments of teachers
in the teaching profession.

As a teacher on the days to come, I am cognizant that I will be

viewed as a paragon of virtue. That I am not only a fountain of information but
also of good values that will have a great impact to the students and the
community. With all these purpose of the Code of Ethics, it is therefore necessary
that I must uphold ALL its suggested standard behavior. This will serve as my
backbone, my pillar in maintaining my honor and dignity as a teacher. this will
serve as my mainstay in demonstrating ethical behaviors as I interact with the
students, colleagues, parents and other stakeholders. Developing and following
the Code of Ethics will surely help me act in a professional manner at all times.
