Objectives:
1. Students will be able to correctly identify areas of weakness (articulation, pitch, rhythm,
tone) in a class recording from Week 4 Day 1
Equipment and Supplies
1. Speakers and an AUX cable
2. Class recording of “Fables” movements I.II.III from Week 4 day 1
3. Projector
4. “Fables” I. The Tortoise and the Hare II. The Boy Who Cried “Wolf!” III. The Country
Mouse and the City Mouse
a. 10 copies of each string part
5. Paper
6. Pencils
Procedure:
1. Week 4 Day 1 recording analysis
a. Set up speaker connected to recording device
b. Remind students to keep out their music
c. Distribute pencils and notepaper for student analysis
i. Notepaper should have 4 sections
1. articulation, pitch, rhythm, tone
2. each section should have a score 0-5
3. under each section have students write an overall comment and a
specific comment about a certain section
d. Play I.II.III Movement of “Fables” with breaks in between each movement for
student to finish their thoughts
i. Students fill in the notepaper with the outline stated above
e. After students finish writing down their comments for each movement teacher
starts dialogue between students
i. Actively listen (i.e flip to pages and sections where students have
comments)
ii. After each student comment, instructor must ask how the orchestra will fix
the problem (i.e identify and resolve the problem)
1. If students do not know quickly give them the answer to move
through the exercise
2. Students turn in notes at the end of class
Assessment Plan:
1. The turned in guided student notes are the assessment to the listening activity
a. Instructor reads the comments and looks for similarities in rankings and
descriptions of the student notes
