Objectives:
1. Students will take an experiential education trip comparing visual and auditory themes in
a musical and how they relate to one another
2. Students will understand how to identify themes, tone painting, and instrumentation in
regards to a musical
Equipment and Supplies
1. Tickets to a local musical
2. Transportation for students
3. Parent chaperones
4. A guided note handout
a. Electronic copy and 35 hard copies
5. Paper
6. Pencils
Procedure:
1. Group students into groups of 5
2. Assign 1 parent chaperone to each group
3. Enter bus in group order
4. Arrive at local theater
5. Students exit the bus in group order
6. Tickets are handed out to chaperones and groups enter the theater with their chaperone
7. Students are given guided note handout
a. Students have the option to finish their guided note handout after the musical or
during the musical
b. Guided note handout guiding questions
i. Do you hear reoccurring themes? If so, please describe the theme and
what the auditory theme visually relates to.
ii. Please state the instrumentation you hear for at least one theme. Describe
the visual theme.
iii. Are there any auditory introductions before a scene in the musical? If so,
what do they invoke? (is it musical foreshadowing??)
iv. How do dynamics evoke feeling in the music? Does it make you as the
listener feel something about a scene or a character?
v. How might you apply these concepts of theming, tone painting,
instrumentation, and dynamics to our own concert piece “Fables”?
Assessment Plan:
1. Students submit turned in guided student notes
2. Teacher analyzes their responses for completion and thought provoking responses
