MET 6 Summary

Chapter 15

Teaching English can be a situation in which we find learners aiming towards different
goals, some need to learn the language for academic purposes, for business purposes, for
personal development or for no reason whatsoever. Teachers should assess learners to
find out what their purpose for learning the language is, they can also evaluate their
current level of English, so that teachers can tailor the lessons according to SS needs.

Some so called obstacles that teachers find along the way, are for example, their lack of
knowledge in the field, their learners are experts at. Teachers should not worry though,
since the learners can enrich the lesson with their knowledge in the field, while the teacher
can provide his English language expertise. In dealing with English lessons for specific
purposes, learners can at times lack motivation, since there are times in which they are not
the ones paying for the example course, this course could have been offered by their
companies or parents, so teachers have to face the challenging scenario of teaching
somebody who lacks interest. Teachers should then try to involve learners by offering
lessons that catch their interest and spark their curiosity.
