Miss Montana, purring like a kitten the entire trip!
American Legion District 1 Commander Joe Yeoman would just like to ask, “What
language would you be speaking if D-Day hadn’t happened?”
June 6, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the invasion of the Allied troops at
Normandy, France, which became known as D-Day. The invasion was part of the
larger “Operation Overlord” which was a multi-national effort; however, of the
approximately one million troops who took part in the invasion, roughly half were
from the United States. Prior to World War II, many Montanans were in the armed
forces, and in the first year following the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1947
over 40,000 more joined. Before the end of the war there were over 57,000 enlisted
soldiers from Montana which constituted 10 percent of our population at that time, one
of the highest numbers per capita of any state. At least 1,500 died during the War, the
remainder are quickly passing. Their service to America and the world should never
be forgotten.
The D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, was the largest by air, land and sea in history
and involved more than 150,000 troops from the United States, Britain and Canada
who stormed the Nazi-occupied French beaches of Normandy. The invasion is
credited with changing the course of the war and ultimately pushing Nazi troops back
to Germany.
A contingent of World War II-era aircraft, including Miss Montana (owned by Johnson
Flying Service out of Missoula), left the United States on May 19th to make the trek
to Normandy for the 75th D-Day anniversary. They flew from Connecticut to Canada,
then over to Greenland, Iceland and Scotland before making their way to England on
