a. Starting at orie corner of the upper trailing edge of the boot, soften the
adhesion line of the boot with solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00). Use a brush or
trigger type oil can to apply the solvent. (look at annex 2)
CAUTION

REMOVAL SHOULD BE SLOW ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE SOLVENT TO UNDERCUT THE

UNDERLAYING ADHESIVE, THUS PREVENTING DAMAGE TO THE DEICER BOOT SURFACE.
b. Apply a minimum amount of solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to the seam
line of the boot. (look at annex 2)
c. While exerting just enough pressure to peel back the boot, separate the
boot from the leading edge for a cord wise distance of four inches across
the upper trailing edge.
NOTE
The area between the boot and the leading edge which has been separated will act as a reservoir for
the solvent; consequently, the boot may be pulled forward with uniform tension.
d. From the centerline of the leading edge, continue to apply solvent (6,
Chart 2, 30-00-00) while tension is being applied to undercut the adhesive
until the boot is removed. (look at annex 2)
e. Thoroughly clean all adhesive form the leading edge with a clean, grease-
free cloth dampened with solvent (1, Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)

NOTE
If extreme care is exercised during removal and no adhesive is removed from the deicer boots or
leading edges reinstallation of the deicer boots may be accomplished by reactivating the adhesive
and following the instructions outlined´ under SURFACE DEICER BOOT INSTALLATION in this
Chapter. If any adhesive is removed, refer to the SURFACE DEICER BOOT
PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES in this Chapter to remove the remaining
adhesive and apply new adhesive before reinstalling the deicer boots.

a. With tape (9, Chart 2, 30-00-00), mask off the area to be covered by the
deicer boot, allowing a 112- to 3/4inch margin beyond the actual deicer boot
bonding area. Mask off accurately to avoid unnecessary clean-up of excess
adhesive. (look at annex 2)
b. Clean the masked area with a clean, grease-free cloth dampened with
solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)
NOTE
Change cloths frequently to avoid dragging contaminants from one area to another. Do not
contaminate the clean supply of solvent by dipping a contaminated cloth in it.
c. Scrub tha bare metal with Scotch-Brite and treat the metal with coating
(14, Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)
d. Reclean the masked area with a clean grease-free cloth dampened with
solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00), then quickly wipe the surface dry with a clean,
grease-free dry cloth. Do not allow the surface to air dry.
(look at annex 2)
NOTE
If the finish on the back of the deicer boot is smooth, mechanically roughen it before cleaning.
e. Carefully clean the rough back surface of the deicer boot at least twice
with a clean, white, grease-free cloth dampened with solvent (6, Chart 2,
30-00-00). Change cloths frequently to avoid contaminating the cleaned
portions of the deicer boot. (look at annex 2)
f. If the surface still shows signs of contamination, repeat the cleaning
sequence until the deicer boot is free of all contaminants.
g. Prepare and apply two coats of adhesive as instructed in the
APPLICATION OF ADHESIVE procedure that follows.
APPLICATION OF ADHESIVE

The chart in Figure 201 gives the set times after installation of the pneumatic deicer boots. The airplane may
be operated after this set time as long as the deicer system is not used until the 48-hour period.

If the deicer boots are flexed before a 48-hour set time, they must be checked for signs of lifting as soon as
possible and be reinstalled or replaced if visible signs of lifting are present. (look at annex 3)
CAUTION
ATTEMPTS TO SPEED UP DRYING TIME BY APPLYING HEAT EXTERNALLY THROUGH THE DEICER
BOOTS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED SINCE IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE BONDLINE TO BE AT THE
INDICATED TEMPERATURE. THE DEICER BOOTS WILL INSULATE THE BONDLINE FROM THE
HEAT BEING APPLIED THROUGH IT AND EXCESS HEAT COULD CAUSE DETERIORATION OF THE
DEICER BOOTS.
NOTE
It is recommended that the actual set time before inflation of the deicer boots be extended as much
as possible. The following instructions’are provided for using the drying time chart in Figure 201 to
determine whether or not to apply the adhesive (3, Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)

a. First determine the room temperature and humidity.
b. Locate the point on the chart where the temperature (scale at the
top of the chart) and humidity (scale on the left side of the chart)
intercept.
c. If the intercept point falls within the INSTALLATION NOT
RECOMMENDED area, do not install the deicer boots until the
temperature and humidity conditions fall within the acceptable range
or the installation is moved to an area where the temperature and
humidity are within the acceptable range.
d. If the intercept point falls within the 24-HOUR ´•DRYING TIME area,
allow 24-hours of drying time.
e. If the intercept point falls within the middle area, read the
recommended drying time by moving straight down to the drying time
scale at the bottom of the chart.
f. Open the container and thoroughly stir the adhesive (3, Chart 2,30-
00-00) with a clean stick. The adhesive can be used without thinning if
a smooth coat’ can be obtained. It may be thinned 10% with a 50-50
blend of solvent (1, Chart 2, 30-00-00) and solvent (6, Chart 2 30-00-
00). If the solids have settled to the bottom of the can and cannot be
blended by stirring, a paint shaker can be used. Do not attempt to use
adhesive that has jelled and/or separated and cannot be blended
together. (look at annex 2)
g. Apply the adhesive to the deicer boots and leading edges using one
of the following methods:
BRUSH COAT METHOD.
a. Apply one even coat of adhesive (3, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to the
cleaned back surface of the deicer boot and to the cleaned surface
on the leading edge. Allow this coat to dry for at least one hour. (look
at annex 2)
b. Apply a second coat of adhesive.to the same surfaces.

NOTE
Care should be taken to apply an even, uniform coating. Brushing the adhesive too long in one
area tends to soften the first coat, causing rolling and balling up of the adhesive.

c. Allow the second coat of adhesive to dry for a minimum of one

hours before installing the deicer boot. Remove the masking tape
before the adhesive thoroughly dries.

c. Allow the second coat of adhesive to dry for a minimum of one hours
before installing the deicer boot. Remove the masking tape before the
adhesive thoroughly dries.
NOTE
Excess open dry time (not to exceed 7 days) is allowable, providing the prepared surfaces are
covered and kept clean.

SPRA Y COA T METHOD

NOTE
For spraying consistency dilute the adhesive (3, Chart 2, 30-00-00) with a blend of two parts
solvent (2, Chart 2, 30-00-00) and one parts solvent (1, Chart 2, 30-00-00). The viscosity of the
adhesive shall be equivalent to 20 seconds through a viscosity meter (4, Chart 1, 30-00-00).
a. Using one of the spray guns (1, Chart 1 30-00-00), spray an even
coat of the diluted adhesive on the cleaned back surface of the deicer
boot and on the cleaned surface of the leading edge. Allow this coat to
dry for at least one hour. (look at annex 1)
b. Spray a second even cross-coat of adhesive on the same surfaces.

c. Allow the second coat of adhesive to dry for a minimum of one hour
prior to installing the deicer boot. Remove the masking tape before the
adhesive thoroughly dries.
NOTE
Excess open dry time (not to exceed 7 days) is allowable, providing the prepared surfaces are
covered and kept clean.
SURFACE DEICER BOOT INSTALLATION

NOTE
While installing the deicer boots, a rubber hand roller (3, Chart 1, 30-00-00) may be used to
remove air bubbles from under the deicer boots. Use care to avoid entrapping air during the
rolling operation. If an air blister does occur, carefully remove the deicer boot by applying solvent
(6, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to the adhesive and carefully pulling outward. Allow the air to escape, then
press on the deicer boot until the adhesive seals the deicer boot in place. A vacuum may be
applied to aid in installation of the deicer boots.
a. For deicer boots and leading edges that do not have a complete
coating of adhesive, prepare the boot and the leading-edge boot area
as instructed in the SURFACE PREPARATION procedure and apply
two coats of adhesive as instructed in the APPLICATION OF
ADHESIVE procedure.
b. Using a carpenter’s chalk line (2, Chart 1, 30-00-00), snap a line
centered on the leading edge of the airfoil sections. (look at annex 2)
c. Snap a corresponding line along the center of the adhesive side of
the deicer boot.

NOTE
Ensure that both chalk lines are approximately centered. If the deicer boot has a white center
reference line, the additional chalk line is not required.

d. Trace the reference and/or chalk lines with a ballpoint pen.

e. Remove the chalk line from the adhesive with a dry cloth if necessary.

NOTE
Have a sufficient number of personnel present to effectively handle the deicer boot.

f. Attach all pneumatic lines to the deicer boot pneumatic connection

tubes with a clamp and use care not to leave fingerprints on the deicer
boot adhesive.
g. Position the deicer boot on the leading edge so that the centerlines
match.
h. Using a clean, lint-free cloth heavily moistened (but not dripping) with
solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00), reactivate the adhesive on the leading
edge and deicer boot around the connections and join as the adhesive
becomes tacky. (look at annex 2)
I. Continue to reactivate the adhesive along the center line on both the
deicer boot and leading edge in spanwise strips about one or two inches
wide and join together when the adhesive becomes tacky. Avoid excess
rubbing of the adhesive during activation.
j. Remove air bubbles by rolling a rubber hand roller (3, Chart 1, 30-00-
00) on the deicer boots parallel with the inflatable tubes. If the deicer
boot becomes offcourse, carefully peel it back, using a minimum
amount of solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00) and reposition it properly. (look
at annex 1)
CAUTION

DO NOT ALLOW AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF SOLVENT TO CONTACT THE DEICER BOOT. THE
SOLVENT IS TO UNDERCUT THE ADHESIVE, THUS PREVENTING DAMAGE TO THE DEICER
BOOT. SHOULD THE ADHESIVE BE REMOVED FROM EITHER THE DEICER BOOT OR LEADING
EDGE, IT MUST BE REPLACED AND ALLOWED TO DRY FOR A MINIMUM OF 30 MINUTES
BEFORE CONTINUING.

k. Continue to activate the top and bottom half of the deicer boot in
sequence. Work spanwise over an area 3 to 4 inches wide and 24
inches long while hand rolling the mated surfaces to get good contact
between the surfaces and remove any air pockets. The rubber hand
roller (3, Chart 1, 30-00-00) may be used on the deicer boots, providing
the direction of the rolling is parallel with the inflatable tubes.
(look at annex 1)

I. Attach the deicer boot in this manner until all but about two inches of
the deicer boot is attached.
CAUTION

WHEN TRIMMING THE DEICER BOOTS, DO NOT TRIM THE DEICER BOOT CLOSER THAN 0.75
INCH FROM THE EDGE OF THE INFLATABLE TUBES.

m. Using a sharp knife, trim the deicer boot as required for proper fit.

n. After the trimming process has been completed, reroll the entire
surface of the deicer boot by applying pressure at the centerline area
and working outward.
o. Roll the edges of the deicer boot with a steel stitcher roller.

p. Remove any remaining masking and clean any extra adhesive from
the deicer boot and airfoil using a clean, white cloth dampened with
solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-00). Do not allow the solvent to run under the
edges of the deicer boot. (look at annex 2)
q. Seal all edges as instructed in the EDGE SEALING procedure.

EDGE SEALING

All cut edges and trailing edges must be sealed with sealant (10, 11 or 12, Chart 2, 30-00-00). Seal the
deicer boots as follows: (look at annex 2)
NOTE
Sealant (12, Chart 2, 30-00-00) shall be used in place of sealants (10 and 11, Chart 2, 30-0000) for
edge sealing where additional protection from fuel spills and abrasion is required. This area is
defined as at least 36 inches either side of the fuel filler opening on the top edge of the boot.
(look at annex 2)
a. Ensure that all excess adhesive has been removed from the deicer
and airfoil. Use a clean white cloth dampened with solvent (6, Chart 2,
30-00-00) to remove the adhesive, but use care not to allow the solvent
to run under the edges of the deicer boots. (look at annex 2)
b. Apply tape (8, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to the deicer boot surface at
trimouts, at the outboard ends and at the trailing edges 1/8 to 1/4 inch
away from the edge of the deicer boot. The tape line must be as straight
as possible. (look at annex 2)
NOTE

Apply primer (5, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to bare metal surfaces. Allow the primer to dry for at least 30
minutes before applying the sealant. Epoxy primed surfaces Should be scuff sanded with 400-
grit sandpaper or a scotchbrite pad in the masked area (includes the masked surface of deicer
boot also) and cleaned with a clean white cloth dampened with solvent (6, Chart 2 30-00-00).
(look at annex 2)

c. Use a flexible, flat-edged tool to apply the sealant with smooth, long
continuous strokes. The sealant must overlap onto the deicer boot and
airfoil surface to provide a smooth, continuous surface. To prevent runs,
DO NOT apply excessive sealant.
d. A second person must follow the sealer and remove the tape
immediately after the sealant has been applied.
e. Allow the sealant to cure for approximately 6 to 12 hours. If conditions
are cold or of high humidity, the sealant may take more time to dry. Allow
the sealant adequate drying time before cleaning up.
f. After the sealant has cured, clean the deicer boot and surrounding
area with a clean white rag dampened with solvent (6, Chart 2, 30-00-
00). (look at annex 2)
CAUTION
DO NOT FLY THE AIRPLANE UNTIL THE DEICER BOOT ADHESIVE HAS CURED THE REQUIRED
SET TIME DETERMINED BY THE CHART IN FIGURE 201. THE DEICER BOOTS SHALL NOT BE
PRESSURED TESTED UNTIL 48 HOURS AFTER THE INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE. PRESSURE
TESTING SHALL NOT EXCEED 18 PSI AND SHALL NOT BE APPLIED FOR LONGER THAN FOUR
MINUTES ON THE DEICER BOOTS.

SURFACE DEICER BOOT REPAIRS

Minor scuffed areas on the boots normally require only the restoration of the conductive surface in the
immediate area; however, if the entire surface ply has been removed, exposing the brown natural rubber
underlay, or if the boot is cut, tom or ruptured, it will be necessary to patch the damage. Deicer Boot
Repair Kit (13, Chart 2, 30-0000) contains cold patches suitable for repairing damaged areas. A cold
patch on a deicer boot is considered a permanent repair. Cold patch repairs can be made as outlined in
the following steps.

In order to maintain the maximum functional effciency of the pneumatic De-icer, the following limits are
recommended by BFGoodrich concerning the allowable number and concentration of patches.

Patches 1 1/4 inches x 2 1/2inches 3 patches per 1Finch square.

Patches 2 1/2 inches x 5 inches 2 patches per 12-inch square
Patches 5 inches x 10 inches 1 patch per 12-inch square.

Replace any De-icer that has a cut, tear or rupture that exceeds 3/4 inch in length. Cold patch repairs
may be made by the following method:

a. Clean around the damaged area with a clean, lint-free cloth
moistened with solvent (1 or 6, Chart 2, 30-0000). (look at annex 2)
b. Select a patch which will extend at least one half inch beyond the
damaged area in all directions.
c. Buff the area around the damage with steel wool or fine sandpaper
to remove any coatings and to thoroughly roughen the boot surface
NOTE
A locally manufactured buffing shield will assure a quality job. The shield can be fabricated from
any thin sheet material (such as acetate, steel, etc.) as long strips taped to the boot around the
perimeter of the damaged area. Remove the buffing shield after the area has been buffed.

d. Wipe the buffed~ area with a clean lint-free cloth moistened with
solvent (1 or 6, Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)
e. Brush one even coat of No. 4 cement (supplied in the repair kit) on
the boot in an area marginally larger than the patch. Remove the
backing from the patch and apply one coat of cement to that surface.
f. Allow 10 minutes for the cement to dry.

g. Position the patch over the area of repair and place the center or one
edge of the patch on the boot. Carefully work down the remainder of the
patch to avoid trapping air pockets. Roll the patch thoroughly, starting
at the center and working to the edges.
h. Allow the patch to set for ten to fifteen minutes, then wipe the patch
and surrounding area with a clean lintfree cloth moistened with solvent
(1 or 6, Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)
i. Satisfactory adhesion of the patch will be attained in about four hours.
If d test of the patch is desired, the boot may be inflated after a minimum
of 25 minutes.
j. Apply one coat of conductive edge sealer (15, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to
the patch and slightly beyond the buffed area, to restore the conductive
surface. Allow the cement to cure for at least one hour, then apply a
second light coat. The airplane may be flown as soon as the cement is
dry; however, the deicers should not be operated for at least four hours.

DEICER BOOT PROTECTIVE COATING APPLICATION

Age Master No. 1 and Icex coating are both products of the B.F. Goodrich Company. Age Master No.
1 (16, Chart 2, 30-00-00) is a liquid coating that protects rubber products from weathering and ozone
and extends the life of the boots. Icex coating (7, Chart 2, 30-00-00) is a silicone-based coating
specifically compounded to lower the strength of ice adhesion on the surface of the deicer boots. Icex
will not damage the rubber boots and offers additional protection from the harmful elements of the
atmosphere.

Página 8 de 15
AGE MASTER NO.1 APPLICATION

Age Master No. 1 (16, Chart 2, 30-00-00) is a protective coating which chemically bonds with the rubber
in the deicer boot and helps resist the deterioratingeffects of ozone, sunlight, weather, oxidation and
pollution. The coating should be applied as instructed on the label of the container. For continued
protection of the boot surface, the coating should be applied every 150 hours. Two treatments per year
should be adequate.

ICEX APPLICATION
Icex coating (7, Chart 2, 30-00-00) is a silicone-based material that lowers the strength of ice adhesion
on the surface of the deicer boots. When properly applied, Icex provides a smooth, polished film that
evens out microscopic irregularities on the rubber surface. Ice formations have less chance to cling and
are removed fastern and cleaner when the boots are operate Icex should be applied as instructed on
the label of the container.

NOTE
The frequency of application will depend on the number of flight operations and the operational
weather conditions. The Icex coating should be reapplied as required to maintain a thin, polished
film on the boot surface.

STALL STRIP INSTALLATION

Figure 202

a. The stall strips are 11 inches long and are installed with the inboard
ends at Wing Station 164.735 wing Station 164.735 is 17 inches
outboard of the end of the fillet)..
b. Clean the boot surface thoroughly, remove all old cement. Mask off
the area where the new strip is to be installed and wipe with solvent (1,
Chart 2, 30-00-00). (look at annex 2)
c. Cement (17, Chart 2, 30-00-00), a two-part cement, is used to attach
the stall strip to the deicer boot. Mix one part of Bostic 10088 with 40
parts of Bostic 1009A by weight. (look at annex 2)
d. Apply two coats of well-mixed cement (17, Chart 2, 30-00-00) to both
surfaces to be bonded, allowing 45 minutes between each coat and 45
minutes after the final coat before bonding. Use the mixture within (8)
hours unless it is stored at a temperature below 65" F.
