Reason why Colombian exports fell 1% in the first quarter

The lower shipments of coal abroad, whose price forecasts point to the downside,
as well as the lower sales of manufactures, ended up affecting the performance of
Colombian exports in the first quarter.

The private sector will have to work very hard in the coming months to reach the
export goal set by the Colombian government for this year, as the results of the first
quarter of the year do not seem to encourage this desire.
The government's goal is to sell US $ 42,500 million abroad in all of 2019, but
according to the Dane, during the first quarter that has just closed Colombian exports
reached US $ 9,588.6 million, reflecting a 1% reduction.
This result, lower than expected, was pressured by lower sales of coal, which are
part of the group of fuels and products of the extractive industries, which fell by 4.1%.
The downward expectations that international coal prices have brought for a few
months apparently influenced this behavior, since some analysts such as Fitch
predict that the prices of this mineral will go from a little more than US $ 100 per ton
in 2018, to a figure close to US $ 85 this year. Neither in the sector of agricultural
products, food and beverages the results of the quarter gave to celebrate, because
in this case the reduction was 0.5%.

The results at the end of the first quarter seem to defy the announcements made a
few weeks ago by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, José Manuel
Restrepo, in the sense that this year the goal aims to overcome the sales result by

registered a growth of 10.4%.

desempeño de las exportaciones colombianas en el primer trimestre.

Muy duro tendrá que trabajar el sector privado durante los próximos meses para
alcanzar la meta de exportaciones trazada por el gobierno colombiano para
este año, pues los resultados del primer trimestre del año no parecen alentar
este anhelo.

La meta del gobierno es vender al exterior US$42.500 millones en todo 2019,

pero de acuerdo con el Dane, durante el primer trimestre que acaba de cerrar las
exportaciones colombianas alcanzaron los US$9.588,6 millones, lo que refleja
una reducción del 1%.

Este resultado, inferior a lo que se esperaba, estuvo presionado por las

menores ventas de carbón, que forman parte del grupo de combustibles y
productos de las industrias extractivas, que tuvieron una caída del 4,1%. Las
expectativas a la baja que traen desde hace unos meses las cotizaciones
internacionales del carbón al parecer influyeron en este comportamiento, pues
algunos analistas como Fitch prevén que los precios de este mineral pasarán de un
poco más de US$100 por tonelada en 2018, a una cifra cercana a los US$85 este
año. Tampoco en el sector de productos agropecuarios, alimentos y bebidas los
resultados del trimestre dieron para celebrar, pues en este caso la reducción fue del
0,5%.

Los resultados al cierre del primer trimestre parecen desafiar los anuncios
que hace unas semanas hizo el ministro de Comercio, Industria y Turismo,
José Manuel Restrepo, en el sentido de que este año la meta apunta a
remontar en 12,5% el resultado de ventas externas del país alcanzado en 2018,
cuando estas llegaron a los US$41.831 millones y registró un crecimiento del 10,4%.
