CORROSION INHIBITORS

Kriti Bhardwaj of CORR-CERT

What are Corrosion Inhibitors.?

Corrosion Inhibitors are substances or mixtures that inhibit, prevent or minimize the corrosion rate in
low concentration and in aggressive environment.

Mechanism of the Corrosion inhibitor.?

Generally, the mechanism of the Corrosion inhibitor is one or more of three that are cited below:

 the inhibitor is chemically adsorbed (सोखा हुआ ) (chemisorption) on the surface of the metal and
forms a protective thin film with inhibitor effect or by combination between inhibitor ions and
metallic surface;
 the inhibitor leads a formation of a film by oxide protection of the base metal;
 the inhibitor reacts with a potential corrosive component present in aqueous media and the
product is a complex

Since when Corrosion Inhibitors are used..?

The use of Corrosion inhibitor is evident since the early XIX century, and are used to protect metals in
processes such as acid picking, protection against aggressive water, acidified oil wells and cooling
systems.

Since years 1950's and 1960's, there was significant advances in the development of technology for
corrosion inhibitor as the application of electrochemistry to evaluate corrosion inhibitors.

During Various studies it was estimated that the market demand of Corrosion inhibitors was divided on
the percentage of their usage in different application:

 26.6% to refining petroleum

 16.9% utilities
 16.7% gas and oil production
 15.3% chemical, 9.5% metals
 7.1% pulp and paper
 8.0% other.

Types of Corrosion Inhibitors..?

 In-Organic CI :- Due to high toxicity of chromate, phosphate and arsenic compounds, related to
various environmental and health problems, strict international laws were imposed.
 Organic CI or Green Corrosion Inhibitors: - The first evidence of natural product use as corrosion
inhibitors is 1930’s. When extracts of Chelidonium majus (Celadine) and other plants were used
on the first time in H2SO4 pickling baths.

Application of Corrosion Inhibitor depends on Various Factors as mentioned below:

 the Pipe‘s material of construction,

 the nature of the substance that the inhibitor is added into,
 the Oil or gas composition
 the operating conditions such as temperature and pressure.

The Corrosion inhibitors could be Anodic in nature or Cathodic. While the Anodic inhibitors form a
passivation layer on the metal surface thus preventing its oxidation and the Cathodic inhibitors retard
the corrosion by inhibiting the reduction of water to hydrogen gas.
