OVERALL OBSERVATION:
This motor was sent to TAW for inspection and recondition after it failed while in service. The motor was received with the pump shaft, auxiliary box, auxiliary box cover,
and the top cover. The pump shaft appears to have been cut off with the other end of the shaft being friction welded to the coupling and retaining nut. The shaft requires
replacing, however, TAW cannot replace the shaft without a drawing or sample from the plant.
The incoming insulation resistance and polarization index are both acceptable (see above). The after clean stator insulation resistance is 3664 Mohms at 1 minute and
10842 Mohms at 10 minutes at 5000 volts, with a polarization index of 2.96. The after clean stator surge test passed at 8600 volts. The after clean phase to phase winding
resistance between averages is 0.790 ohms with a phase imbalance of 0.013%. A DC Hi pot test was performed, and the results are 2.32 microamperes at 10170V. The
coreloss is 1.43 W/lb. @ 85,000 lines of flux. No hot spots were found. The motor was not received with a terminal box. TAW will quote to fabricate a 30" x 30" x 18"
aluminum terminal box with electrical standoffs and copper bus bars. The stator will also have to be re-leaded so as the leads will reach the connection point. The re-lead of
the stator will also be quoted.
Significant damage was done to the upper bearing assembly and NRR assembly. The NRR was spun backwards destroy the ratchet, pins, and the NRR stop plate. The
thrust block and carrier nut were also damaged beyond repair. These components will have to be replaced with new components. TAW will quote to replace the
aforementioned parts. The standpipe for the upper bearing assembly was destroyed and will need to be made new.
The rotor's hollow shaft is bent with a twisted keyway for the thrust block. The shaft is no longer viable for service. TAW will quote to remove the shaft and to
fabricate/install a new one. The upper bearing housing's bore was enlarged by the bearing during the failure. The upper bearing housing will need to be bored, bushed, and
insulated. Both seal housings for the upper bearing were impacted and will need to be bored and bushed to return the proper fit to the shaft. TAW will quote to fabricate,
install, and seal a new stand pipe as well as the previously mentioned mechanical repairs caused by the failure.
The lower inner bearing cap seal is oversized with clearance to the shaft of 0.042". TAW recommends that this fit be 0.025"-0.030" for a 6-pole motor. TAW will quote to
bore and bush the lower inner bearing cap seal.
To maintain long-term reliability, TAW will quote to replace the bearings, sight glasses, furnish and install heaters, and to replace the oil plugs.
