English Vinglish served a great entertainment with its hilarious, touching, and sensitive plot about
the journey of an Indian house wife who overcome her insecurity to mastering English language and
assuring self-confident. This movie not a mainstream typical of Bollywood movie, its merging
Hollywood and Bollywood themes and techniques. With the great cast and awesome script this movie
nominated for The Academy award of Foreign Language. In addition, Gauri Shinde as the director won a
special award for Best Debut Director.

As previously mentioned, this story is about a portrayal of an unappreciated Indian house wife
named Shashi who sells ladoos (kind of sweet) as a part time job. Her successful businessman husband
and smart daughter are often disparage Shashi for her poor English. They laugh at her and imply she is
not smart. One day she accept an invitation to help out with a family wedding in New York. While
traveling New York on her own, she felt lost and confused. Following this, Shashi decide to take English
course to be more adept in English. There she meet a lot of people who learn English like her and it help
her gaining her confident in learning English. Shahsi made friend with the students in class, among them
is Laurent who has a feeling for Shashi. After a while Shashi felt the difficulties to balance her duties and
her clas. Moreover the final test scheduled the same time as the Wedding day. But still her friends invited
to the wedding and then they can heard Shashi deliver a speech. Thus, we can see the main character
transformation to overcome her problem and proofing her worth.

This movie is filled with amazing actors and actress who truly make the film. First, Shashi
Godbole (Sridevi) as the main character acting so natural and realistic, and then Satish Godbole ( Adil
Hussain ) as the male lead playing crucial part as a skeptical and indifferent husband who set the fire of
the conflict, Laurent ( Mehdi Nebbou) a second lead male as a soft-spoken French chef create a perfect
character even though he is playing a supporting role. The casting for this movie is truly perfect and other
cast are the all up-and-coming Bollywood stars.

The film is shot on location in India and the US, especially in New York City (it’s also include
foreign some cameo). The global appeal of English Vinglish is also no doubt due to the fact that it deals
with social condition where those who do not speak English are sometimes looked down upon moreover
the main character experience might be similar for some people who traveling overseas.

One of the best things about this movie is that it’s so inspiring. It taught us to be tolerance, and
respect each other. From Shashi we can learn not to give up and fight our insecurity by our effort until we
found our strength. The message that I get from this movie is don’t let the world punch us right in the
face. The things that show our weak side are also the same one that make us stronger in the long run. Also
family should support each other and not make us feel small.

Overall, this is a great movie with a mix of a ton of laugh, a love story and life lesson all rolled
into one. If you’re looking for an Inspiring yet touching and funny movie, this is undoubtedly the movie
for you.
