Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement
Procedure

1 SCOPE
This procedure provides guidelines for measuring the thickness of tank & other
component installed at Gail India Limited, Auraiya, by using Manual Ultrasonic pulse
echo contact method at temperatures not to exceed 53°C. This practice is applicable to
any material in which ultrasonic waves will propagate at a constant velocity throughout
the part and from which back reflections can be obtained and resolved.

2 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to establish and maintain documented procedure to
ensure that Ultrasonic Thickness Measuring Testing is carried out to measure the
thickness of tank & other component of the industries.

ASNT SNT TC –1A Guidelines for Personnel Qualification and

Certification in Nondestructive Testing.

4 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION
The qualification of the NDT inspector to carry out this testing shall be minimum NDT
level II in Ultrasonic Testing Method in accordance with documents ASNT SNT- TC-1A.
The recording of the test results shall be carried out by the NDT Level II.

Procedure

5 PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION
Procedure qualification test shall be performed to the satisfaction of the company before
starting of the work using multi step thickness standardization block that yields the
maximum response for this procedure qualification test.

6 SAFETY
All Personnel shall have responsibility to themselves and other persons with regard to
Safety and shall ensure that site facilities are adequate with regard to lighting,
scaffolding prior to commencement of operations.

7 EQUIPMENT
 GE/ OLYMPUS/ SILVERWING/ KRAUTKRAMER/ PANAMETRICS/CYGNUS
The Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Equipment GE/ Olympus/ Silverwing/ Krautkramer/
Panametrics/Cygnus shall be used for measuring the thickness of materials. These
thickness readout instruments are modified versions of the pulse-echo instrument. The
elapsed time between the initial pulse and the first echo or between multiple echoes is
converted into a meter or digital readout. The instruments are designed for
measurement and direct numerical readout of specific ranges of thickness and
materials.
 PROBE
The following Probe shall be used
TR Probe: D790, 5 MHz, 10 mm TIP diameter (Panametrics MG2).

8 COUPLANT
Following Couplant shall be used:
Water, oil or grease mixed with oil shall be used.

9 SURFACE CONDITION
The surface shall be prepared to the extent necessary so as to provide a sufficiently
smooth area for the scanning. This area shall be free of any irregularities such as spatter,
grinding or chipping marks, dust, dirt, red-oxide or any foreign matter that might
interfere with the examination.

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement
Procedure

Surface preparation by grinding, machining or other methods may be necessary where

surface irregularities would interfere with measurements of the thickness of the material.

10 PROCEDURE
Thickness (T), when measured by the pulse-echo ultrasonic method, is a product of
the velocity of sound in the material and one half the transit time (round trip) through
the material.

The calibration and Thickness measurement shall be carried out in accordance to

manufacturer Manual and following steps shall be followed.

a. Connect the suitable probe to UTGM

b. Switch ON the Equipment.
c. Calibrate the UTGM by checking the thickness of reference standard block after
applying couplant.
d. Select the standard thickness to measure the desired thickness range and also 2
thicknesses lower and higher to it.
e. Press button upward or downward
f. Keep the probe on the Testing Surface and take three readings for average.

11 ACCEPTANCE OR REJECTION CRITERIA

Thickness measurement data collected during inspection will be provided to client for
review and acceptance.

12 POST EXAMINATION CLEANING

The Post Examination Cleaning shall be carried out, using dust free cloth or using a
suitable solvent cleaner, as soon as examination of the part is completed.

enclosed report format and shall be signed by NDT inspector, contractor and client’s
representative.
