CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The research mainly discusses the water curtains on the effects and its effectivity towards

the students’ environment especially on their performance associated with the room temperature.

The water curtain will be used as the intervention to indicate the results and significant changes in

the room temperature and students’ performance with the presence of the water curtains.

According to the website Rio Renewable (retrieved in 2014) with their proposal in roof

ponds which applied the process of indirect evaporation. Evaporating process can be a result of a

positive outcome in the buildings, as a cooling element or simple as the buildings heat sink. By

the process of evaporation, it can elevate the outside and avoid elevating the humidity inside the

room. Heat is consumed and thus the water in the evaporation, absorbs the heat and releases the

cooling moist.

The proponents would like to solve the issue on the ventilation of the students’ classroom

since it critically affects the students’ performance. The water curtain is being tested to try to

manipulate the room temperature, since it is not widely known for its attractive characteristic only.

But because of the possibility to create brain waves that the proponents see as a factor that can

boost the students’ (persons) performance.

Statement of the Problem

The study (research) aims to investigate the effect(s) of the water curtains STEM in Ormoc

City Senior High School.

Specifically, the proponent seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the room temperature of the students’ environment?

a. With the presence of water curtain.

b. Without the presence of water curtains.

2. How are the scores of the students (performance) Pre-test?

Without the presence of water curtains.

3. How are the scores of the students (performance) Post-test?

With the presence of water curtain.

4. Are there any significant differences between the room with the water curtains and without

it’s’ presence?

5. Is the water curtain an effective instrument to manipulate the room temperature and to the

students’ performance?
Significance of the Study

The study is very important to the following entities:

Teachers. They will benefit from the output of this study which aims to enhance the focus and

convenience, leading to boost their performance.

Principal. She will benefit from this study throughout the findings of the study and it will help her

identifying the possible flaws that can be made by the issue.

school.

DepEd, Ormoc City Division. The division office will be more aware of its responsibilities in

supporting the school through helping the school building or each classroom to have proper

ventilation.

Community. The community will support the school to achieve its goal to have a convenient

classroom. And will be informed on the effectiveness of water curtains.

The researchers. The researchers’ skills will be improved and at the same time, as the guidance

of the researcher adviser, it is a learning opportunity for them to identify the possible action to

maximize the convenience in a student environment.

Future Researcher. The data for this research will serve as a reference among the future

researcher whom wish to take the same study

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study focused on the temperature environmental factor which critically affect the

learning process of the students’ due to the disturbing sweating and over consciousness about itself

rather than the lessons being discussed. Moreover, it will be conducted in the STEM- Galilei in

OCSHS for S.Y. 2017-2018. A week will be used to gather data and observe the changes in the

environment with the presence of the water curtains; and without the water curtain. The number

of water curtain is limited only in one side of the classroom, resulting to the division of effects

depending on the students’ location towards the water curtains. Furthermore, the researchers will

give more focus on the result of the nearest students towards the water curtains. And since the

participants of the study is grouped as a section and by their position towards the water curtains, a

purposive sampling will be used in the chosen section(s).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Related Literature

According to Josean Perez, Julio Montano and Jose Perez of Westview High School,

Portland, Oregon. The knowledge of the students can be measured through their skills. But through

their research they found out that the knowledge and skills are not the only factors that can affect

the students’ performance. But mainly the noise, language capability, mood, and most and critical

of all the room temperature. They hypothesize and concluded that the students’ performance is

high in a neutral temperature environment. Making a highlight that the room temperature should

be considered as a critical factor that plays a significant role in the students’ performance.

According to the Blairs Air Conditioning and heating gathered in August 09, 2016.

Students’ performance would vary depending on the room temperature namely their attention and

focus. Moreover, those factors of the students’ performance are not the only factors being affected
but also to their health. Poor air quality could occur respiratory diseases, allergy, and microbial

pollutant. As they conducted a test on the students, they found out that when the temperature strikes

between 70 degrees- 79 degrees their scores hit the lowest score. Concluded that the brain exerts

much effort to control the body temperature rather than metal task, leaving it less prioritized.

School can help increase student’s academic performance by easily keeping the temperature at

consistent level.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study being a quantitative research will be using experimental method. Having the

main objective to determine the possible effects of a ventilated student environment respectively

on the room temperature and students’ performance.

A. CROWBACH’S ALPHA (Reliability)

A. Crowbach’s Alpha (Reliability)

In Crowbach’s Alpha the proponent will going to conduct a pre-test in the STEM- Fleming

as well as in STEM- Galilei. STEM- Fleming will also undergo with a post-test but without the

presence of the water curtains while STEM- Galilei will also undergo with a post-test but with the

presence of a water curtains. Here the students’ performance of the sections will be compared and

will be used as a piece of reliable source of information. To further compare a section with and the

section without the presence of the water curtains.

B. T-Test (Effectivity)

In t-test the STEM- Galilei’s room temperature and students’ performance will be

compared when the water curtain is available and the time in which they do not have.

Intervention

As the design of the study is more on experimental focusing on the effects on a ventilated

environment. The water curtains will be the intervention to give the room a cooling and student

performance enhancement. Through its indirect evaporating mechanism, it can contribute a cool

moisture by converting the water into gas. By tuning the right sound in the impact of the water on

the water surface of the reservoir the alpha waves can be achieved. Alpha waves are known to

improve and boost the brains performance. The effectivity of the water curtains will affect by the

factor of its size and number available.

Along with the problem of the ventilation of the classrooms, the performance of the

student’s is badly affected. Some of these effects can be seen through their physical appearance,

controlling their emotion, social interaction, and academics which lead to losing their confidence.

The Sample

The school we have chosen is the school where the proponents study, Ormoc City Senior

High School located in Barangay Don Felipe Larrazabal, Ormoc City. Specifically, to the section

where they belong (STEM-Galilei), and more specifically to right side of the classroom near the

windows (due to the limited water curtains present). The said school is a newly build and founded.

It is expected to have more improvements especially to the students’ facilities.

The respondents of the study will be the students of Ormoc City Senior High School

specifically in Grade 12 STEM, Section Galilei and Section Fleming. The section Fleming, under

the advisory of Mrs. Jusain, will be used for the data gathering on the Crowbach’s Alpha. While

the STEM Galilei is under the advisory of Mr. Nepaya in which the proponents already belong for

secure data gathering. The class is divided into groups, according to their location and distance

towards the water curtains to determine the range of effectiveness of water curtains to the limited

number of water curtains that the proponents had.

The respondents will be divided into two (2) groups the right and left side. Determining to

use of purposive sampling since it will be selected based on experience and performance of the

group to be sampled. The different groups will represent this location and distance towards the

water curtain. The effectiveness of the water curtain will be determined through the observation

of the researchers in the selected students in each group.

The school we have chosen is the school were the researchers study, Ormoc City Senior

High School located in Barangay Don Felipe Larrazabal, Ormoc City. Specifically, to the section

where they belong (STEM- Galilei), and more specifically to the left side of the classroom near

the windows (due to the limited water curtains present). It is under the advisory of Mr. Nepaya.

Research Instruments

As a study in water curtains to determine the effectivity and the range it can cover. The

study’s most important instrument is the water curtains itself, for it is the main material to achieve

the objective of the study, followed by the room thermometer to determine the change of

temperature in the surrounding. The proponents will measure the room temperature with and

without the presence of the water curtain. Then the questionnaire will be given to tally the
difference of the students’ score in the quiz (questionnaire) in Physics subject specifically on the

topic of Dynamics.

The study also conducted a survey affiliated with the questionnaire which is also served

as another source of information or data to determine the range of effectivity of the study (water

curtains) in a humid student environment (no ventilation) which triggers to affect the students’

performance.
Data Gathering Procedure
In gathering data in every aspect that the research needs, the following procedure is

Figure 2: Methodological Framework of Procedure

Since the study aims to identify the effects and the possible effectivity of the water curtains

in a humid environment due to less ventilation. It is a must to compare the data with the presence

of the water curtains which serves as the independent variable to gather the dependent variable or

the effects of the water curtains; and without the presence of it.

Moreover, the study will be using t-test as a statistical treatment since it will be selected

based on experience or knowledge, to determine the significant difference with and without the

water curtains; and the benefits that it can give.

Data Analysis Procedure
In determining of the effectivity of the water curtains towards the student environment, the

test for the temperature and students’ performance will be used.

The data findings calculated by its mean and will be interpret by the statistical difference

of the environment with and without the presence of the water curtains. With the t-test, the

difference of both will be significant to each other (room temperature and performance) declaring

the effects. Therefore, the researcher will accept the conclusion that:

 In the Temperature:

 With the presence of the water curtain the room temperature still hot

 With the presence of the water curtain the room temperature less hot

 In the Students’ Performance:

 With the presence of water curtains the students’ performance is low

 With the presence of water curtains the students’ performance has increased

 In the Significant Difference:

 There is no significant changes in the room temperature and students’ performance

with the presence of water curtain

 There is significant changes in the room temperature and students’ performance

with the presence of water curtain
