PART – A (Common for all candidates)

UNIT - I
Structure and properties of Electronic Engineering materials: Conductors, Semiconductors and
Insulators, magnetic, Ferroelectric, Piezoelectric, Ceramic, Optical and Super-conducting materials.
Electromagnetic and Electromechanical components. Electron Devices: semiconductors, Hall effect,
Junction theory, Different types of diodes and their characteristics, Bipolar Junction transistor, Field
effect transistors, power MOSFETs, Basics of ICs, basic of Opto Electronics. Analog Electronic Circuits:
Transistor biasing and stabilization, Small signal analysis, Power amplifiers, Frequency response, Wide
band techniques, Feedback amplifiers, Tuned amplifiers, Oscillators, Rectifiers and power supplies, Op
Amp PLL, other linear integrated circuits and applications, Pulse shaping circuits and waveform
generators.
UNIT - II
Network theory : Network analysis techniques; Network theorems, transient response, steady state
sinusoidal response; Network graphs and their applications in net- work analysis; Tellegen’s theorem.
Two port networks; Z, Y, h and transmission parameters. Combination of two ports, analysis of common
two ports. Network functions: parts of net- work functions, obtaining a network function from a given
part. Transmission criteria: delay and rise time, Elmore’s and other definitions effect of cascading.
Elements of network synthesis.

UNIT - III
Signals and Systems :Classification of signals and systems, System modelling in terms of differential
and difference equations; State variable representation; Fourier series; Fourier representation; Fourier
series; Fourier transforms and their application to system analysis; Laplace trans-forms and their
application to system analysis; Convolution and superposition integrals and their applications; Z-
transforms and their applications to the analysis and characterisation of discrete time systems; Random
signals and probability, Correlation functions; Spectral density; Response of linear system to random
inputs.

UNIT – IV
Electronic Measurements and instrumentation : Basic concepts, standards and error analysis;
Measurements of basic electrical quantities and parameters; Electronic measuring instruments and their
principles of working: analog and digital, comparison, characteristics, application. Transducers; Electronic
measurements of non electrical quantities like temperature, pressure, humidity etc; basics of telemetry
for industrial use Control Systems Transient and steady state response of control systems; Effect of
feedback on stability and sensitivity; Root locus techniques; Frequency response analysis. Concepts of
gain and phase margins: Constant-M and Constant-N Nichol’s Chart; Approximation of transient response
from Constant-NNichol’s Chart; Approximation of transient response from closed loop frequency
response; Design of Control Systems, Compensators; Industrial controllers.
UNIT - V
Digital Electronic Circuits: Transistor as a switching element; Boolean algebra, simplification of
Boolean functions, Karnaguh map and applications; IC Logic gates and their characteristics; IC logic
families : DTL, TTL, ECL, NMOS, PMOS and CMOS gates and their comparison; Combi- national logic
Circuits; Half adder, Full adder; Digital comparator; Multiplexer De-multiplexer; ROM and their
applications, Flip flops, Different types of counters and registers, Waveform generators, A/D and D/A
converters. Semiconductor memories, Number Systems, Data representation; Fundamentals of computer
architecture; Processor design; Control unit design; Memory organisation, I/O System Organisation,
Microprocessors: Architecture and instruction set of Microprocessors 8085 and 8086, Assembly language
Programming, Microprocessor Based system design.

PART – B
Specialization : Microwave Engineering/Radar Engineering (MRE)

UNIT - I
Cartesian, Cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems : Vector analysis – Electrostatics
Coulomb’s Law. Energy and potential, Potential field of system of charges, potential gradient. Energy
density, Boundary conditions in static electric field, Capacitance of two-wire line, Continuity equation,
current density, Poisson’s equation, Laplace equation, Uniqueness theorem, Applications of simple
practical cases. Magneto statics, Time varying fields, Maxwells equations, Boundary conditions in Em
field. Em wave equations in free space and conductors. Sinusoidal variations. Uniform plane wave, wave
motion in free space. Wave motion in perfect dielectrics, lossy dielectrics and conductors. Polrization -
linear, elliptical and circular polarizations. Energy theorem and Poynting vector, Instantaneous, average
and complex Poynting vector. Reflection of plane waves by a perfect conductor, normal and oblique
incidence. Reflection of plane waves by a perfect dielectric, normal and oblique incidence. Reflection
coefficient. Transmission coefficient, power and energy calculations.

UNIT – II
Properties of transmission lines: Transmission line equations from source and load end. The finite
and infinite lines. Velocity of propagation, input impedance. Open and short circuited lines, telephone
cables, distortion less transmission, loading of cables, Campbell's formula. Properties of Transmission
lines at UHF, Reflection co-efficient, Standing waves and SWR, Distribution of voltages and currents on
loss less line. Characteristics of half wave, Quarter-wave and one eighth wave lines. Construction and
applications of Smith chart. Transmission line matching. Single and double stub matching.
UNIT – III
Antennas and Wave Propagation :Principles of radiation, retarded potential and isotropic radiator,
Basic antenna parameters. Point sources, Current distribution, infinitesimal dipole. Half-wave dipole,
quarter wave monopole, Effect of earth on vertical patterns, Loop antenna, Helical Antennas. Arrays of
point sources, two element array with equal and unequal amplitudes, different phases. Linear array with
uniform distribution, binomial array, principle of pattern multiplication. Broadside and End fire arrays,
effect of inter element phase shift on beam scanning. VHF,UHF turnstile antennas, Rhombic Antenna,
Yagi - Uda Array, Log periodic Antenna, Horn, Parabolic Reflector, Lens antennas. Microstrip antennas,
Antenna Measurements, Antenna temperature. Ground wave propagation, Space and Surface waves,
Tropospheric refraction and reflection, Duct propagation, Sky wave propagation, Regular and irregular
variations in ionosphere. Friis transmission formula, Line of sight propagation.

UNIT – IV
Micro waves & Guided Waves: Propagation of TE, TM and TEM waves between parallel planes.
Velocity of propagation, wave impedance, attenuation in parallel plane guides. Waveguides: TE and TM
waves in rectangular and circular waveguides, Wave Impedance, Characteristic Wave Impedance,
Attenuation and Q of waveguides. Cavity resonators, resonant frequency and Q, Applications of cavity
resonator. Microwave Circuits and Components, Microwave Tubes, Microwave Solid State Devices.
Elements of strip lines, microstrip lines, slot lines and fin–lines.

UNIT – V
Radar and Satellite Communication : Free space & fiber optic; Propagation of signals at HF, VHF,
UHF and microwave frequency, Introduction to radar, Doppler effect, CW radar, FM CW radar, multiple
frequency CW radar. MTI radar, delay line canceller, range gated MTI radar, blind speeds, staggered
PRF, limitations to the performance of MTI radar, non-coherent MTI radar. Tracking radar, Orbital
aspects of Satellite Communication, Indian scenario in communication satellites, Satellite sub-systems,
multiple access techniques, comparison of FDMA, TDMA, CDMA. Introduction to satellite link design,
basic transmission theory, system noise temperature and G/T ratio, design of down link and uplink,
design of satellite links for specified C/N, satellite data communication protocols.
