INTERVIEW GUIDE – FEMALE CAREGIVERS

Introduction
 Thank participants for agreeing to take part – mention that the discussion should between 45 to 60
minutes.
 Stress there are no right or wrong answers – we are just interested in finding out their views and opinions.
Reiterate that there will be a chance for them to shape the agenda of the discussion.
 Research Objective: Understand feeding practices in the community XXX, health practices, and lifestyles –
to benefit the community XXX.
 Reassure participants of confidentiality (we will not attribute comments to them) and that they do not
have to have to answer anything they do not want to.
 Participants sign the inform consent.
 Permission to record and take photos – for analysis purposes only

Description/questions
1. General background information

Introductory questions:

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?


(Prompt if needed: Age, number of children and their ages, number of members who live in the household and who
they are (grandmother, etc.)

2. Lifestyle

Can you tell me about your typical day – what you usually do?

If you manage to have free time, what do you like doing?

When you were younger, what did you hope for the future? [Probe: for family/personal life? For work?]

Who do you admire/aspire to be like? (i.e. Your role model?)

What do you hope for your children?


o How do you hope to achieve those dreams for your child?

Do you use social media? [Probe: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, other? What do you use it for?]
Do you watch TV? If yes what is your favourite show? Do you listen to the radio, if yes what is your favourite
show? Probe: Why?
How do you usually learn about news in your community? events for example
Which festivities happen in your community? [Probe: Which is your favourite festivity, why? When do they
happen?]

3. Eating habits

Now can you tell me about what you eat regularly/on a daily basis?

4. Daily child feeding practices

Tell me about your [youngest child/child’s name, age], and what they eat on a usual day

Probe: Do you buy any special food for your under 5 year old/s?
- If yes, what do you buy and why? (What benefits do you perceive in the products?)
- If not why not

How old were they when you started to give them food and drink other than breast milk/formula milk? Why?

Do they eat anything between meals?

5. Knowledge, attitudes and perceptions around eggs

If you ate more eggs, do you think you would benefit in any way?/ if your children ate more eggs, do you think
they would benefit in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?

Have you heard before that eating one egg a day can significantly prevent malnutrition in children (like being too
short for one’s age and being too thin for one’s height)?

Do you think this is correct?

What do you think of the following statements? Have you heard them before? Do you believe they are correct? If
yes why, if no why not?

An egg provides almost 60% of the protein requirement of a breastfeeding 7-12 month’s child.

If a pregnant woman consumes two eggs per day, she will be meeting 30% of her nutrient requirements for several
vitamins and minerals which are essential for healthy foetal growth and development.

Do any taboos exist in relation to eating eggs during pregnancy? Feeding children eggs? If yes, what are they? How
common are they? Do you believe in them?

What do you think could encourage people to eat more eggs/ feed more eggs to their children? Which means of
communication should we use to reach people I your community most effectively? (Probe on mobile phone, radio,
television, newspaper other)

Please can you tell me if the following statements are correct or incorrect

Eggs can cause skin ulcers and itchiness in small children


Eggs can cause other diseases to small children
Local eggs are better than broiler eggs
Pregnant women should stay away from eggs

To ask recipients of the 1 million egg movement

How long have you been receiving eggs from the one million egg movement?

Can you tell me what the one million egg movement is?

What do you receive apart from eggs? Prove: any information, any advice? Has this information been useful?

What have you learned through the one million egg movement that you did not know before?

6. Knowledge and beliefs around child health and maternal/ infant nutrition

Tell me about the last time your child was sick.

PROBE

- What was wrong with them?


- How did you recognise that they were unwell? (e.g. loss of appetite, other symptoms, etc)
- What did you do? (e.g. seek help from someone (who?), gave special food, etc)
- Do you believe that child diseases can be prevented? If yes, how? Which ones? If not, why not?

- Do you believe that there is a link between the food a child eats and the child’s health? If yes, why? If no,
why not?

Do you remember how your mother fed you as a child? Probe: what kinds of foods did she feed you?

Have you adapted some of your mother’s ways of feeding you for your own child? If yes, what? If not, why not?

Does your mother /mother in law give you advice on how to feed your child? Do you follow her advice? Who else
in the family gives you advice? Do you follow their advice? If yes why if not why not?

To ask pregnant women:


Does the food the mother eats during her pregnancy and during lactation affect the child? If yes how? If not why not?
Are there any foods a pregnant woman or a lactating woman should or should not eat? Why? Why not? Probe for
eggs
Where do pregnant women receive information about pregnancy? Is nutrition part of this information? If yes, please
tell us what information you have received, if not, would you like to receive this information in the future? From
whom? Why?
What is most important during pregnancy? Anything you can do or should not do to help a healthy pregnancy?

To ask lactating women


What do you like most about breastfeeding? What do you like the least?
- How does breastfeeding make you feel? Proud, drained, etc.
Are you eating more of certain foods? Or avoiding certain foods whilst breastfeeding? Why?
Are there any foods which are good for breastfeeding women? If yes, which ones? If not, why not? [Probe about
nutrients needed to produce milk]
Are there any foods which are bad for breastfeeding women? If yes, which ones? Why are they bad?
Do women need to eat more whilst breastfeeding? If no, why not? If yes, why?

What role does food play in a child’s development? Probe: are there any foods that are harmful for the pregnant
mother, the baby, the child? Any foods that are very beneficial for a child’s development? Which ones and why?

Where did you learn about the effects of these foods on a child’s development? Is this a common belief in your
community?

What food do you think your child should be eating when they are 3 months old? 6 months old? 2 years? 5 years?
- What are the benefits of eating these foods you just mentioned at the different ages for the child?

Do you use any vitamins or other supplements for your children or for any other family member?
- If yes, which ones? Why use them? (perceived benefits)
- If no, why not?

Where do you think is a good place to learn about child feeding? What is a good source of information on this topic?
