I. Objectives
The plant tour aims to provide a new learning environment for fifth year industrial
engineering students for them to have a more-depth understanding of what an industrial
engineer does in the real world.
1. To observe the different production and techniques carried out on industrial plants.
2. To explore the various processes and machinery used in industrial plants.
3. To have a feel of the actual work in industrial plants and know how safety is a
priority.
4. To have an up-close view of the entire production plant as opposed to seeing it in
pictures and videos.
II. Procedures
1. The class was divided into two group to facilitate the seminar and plant tour
activity. Officers were selected for the two activity.
2. The class decided to divide the number of companies required to visit in separate
days and in separate weeks.
3. The officers provided all the requirements needed for the plant tour which includes
the preparation of document for OSA’s approval, seeking for plant/company to be
visited, bidding with travel and tours companies, preparation of waivers, and
medical check-up for the participants.
4. The fifth year students of industrial engineering departed from Lucban, Quezon at
4:00am of April 4, 2019 for the first tour and 4:00am of April 8, 2019 for the second
tour.
5. The student visited first Metals Industry Research and Development Center
(MIRDC), Taguig, Metro Manila then Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Binan,
Laguna. The remaining hours was spent at Ayala Mall Novaliches.
6. The second tour started by visiting Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Santo Tomas,
Batangas then Zenith Foods Corporation (Jollibee Foods Commissary) Calamba
City, Laguna and lastly Del Monte Philippines, Inc., Cabuyao, Laguna.
To develop and expand the metals industry of the Philippines, Republic Act
No. 4724, dated June 18, 1966, established the MIRDC. The center was primarily
tasked to work for close rapport between the government and the industry in order
to foster the advancement of metals engineering and allied industries in the country.
This was amended by Republic Act No. 6428, dated May 31, 1972,
reorganizing and renaming the MIDC into Metals Industry Research and
Development Center (MIRDC), giving it corporate existence and enlarging its
power. The administration of the Center and the exercise of its corporate authority
were vested exclusively in a Board or Trustees organized under this Act.
Finally, Executive Oder No. 494 dated December 6, 1991 transformed the
MIRDC into a regular government agency attached to the Department of Science
and Technology. This was fully implemented on 27 May 1993,

IV. Observation
A. Environment / Company location / Company layout
Del Monte is located at Brgy. Diezmo, Cabuyao, Laguna having a total lot
area of 1 hectare. They properly welcome and accepts the guests and lists their
names in the log book. You can see the production area through a series of hallway.
There are many room for different departments and offices. Also, you can have a
good view of the whole production area including the warehouse on the upper floor
of the building. They production area process the product well properly. The noise
is neutral, not that noisy.
B. Materials and Processes
Fresh loaf of bread undergoes different processes run by machines that are
fully automated with a little human intervention for quality inspections. The
company uses conveyors, lots of them and of different types and robots. It consist
of15 processes. The processes are ingredient preparation, sponge mixing,
fermentation, dough mixing, dividing, rounding, intermediate proofing, moulding,
final proofing, baking, depanning, cooling, slicing, automatic begging, G-Lock
Sealing and metal detection.
There are different food beverages are produced in this company. The
production area consist of 13 processes which are supply, de-palletizer, uncasing,
pre-infed inspectioning, bottle washer, empties inspection, electronic bottle and
inspection, filling, sealing, coding, full goods inspection, caser and palletizer.
Different machines and robots used to produce the final product. Some of them are
the blow-moulding machine, filling machine, conveyor system and others.
B.4 Zenith Foods Corporation (Jollibee Foods Commissary)
Del Monte Phil has 8 equipment named Batching tanks, Mixing and holding
tanks, Pasteurizer, CIP Plant, Blow molder, Filler, Sleever and Shrink wrapper.
There are processes in order to make their primary good which is Fit n right, first
is material preparation, then batching area and process area. This company almost
utilizes the same processes and materials being used by PCPPI since they both
produce food beverages in PET bottles. They have a laboratory offices to test if
there are any chemical reactions that would take place since their raw materials are
purely fresh with no preservatives. These are the following steps in making the
product, bottle dumping,, perform dumping, perform hearing, perform blowing and
stretching, blown bottle conveying through airveyor, bottle rinsing, product filling,
cappng, fill height detector, conveying of filled bottle, bottle tilting or pasteurizing
the cap, laser coding, product cooling, bottle inspection, bottle drying, sleeves
application, sleeves shrinking, case forming, case palletizing, stretch wrapping and
full goods pull out.
C. Technology
to make their finished product. All the machines used in producing steels and gears
are modern and easy to use. There is a respective room for every machine according
to its usage. The company is also updated in new invented machine that will help
them to produce their product in effective and efficient way. The example machines
are Zeiss, Crysta Appex, Beyong 504, 6axis, Metric-mm, Micrometer and
sigmascope 500 which are used in Quality Assurance. Here are some of the rooms
the participants visited: 2 units of CNC Lathe and 4 units of integrated manual/
CNC milling machines in CNC Machining room 1 , grinder machine, CNC Milling
machine and mill turn in CNC Machining room 2, grinding room for surface grinder
machines, CNC machine room 4 and 5, assembly & repair room and etc.
D. Safety
Workers are wearing their proper uniforms but some don’t have wearing
protective gears. They said that they are not really exposed to their workplace that’s
why they don’t wear any PPEs. Also, they are not producing many products but
just 2-3 parts that are mostly for testing.
The company really ensures the safety of their workers and continues to
improve their safety practices by passing the standards. Since most of the workers
are exposed to machines, they are provided with proper gears and clothes. Because
they are strict in implementation of occupational health and safety practices.
Workers inside the production are all friendly but they were all focused on
their tasks and wears proper uniform. The workers are observed to be following the
corporation’s rules since they are Food Company.
Del Monte makes that all their workers adhere to their safety practices to
continuously provide a quality product. They have pictures for every workstations
to act as a guide and reminder of the proper uniforms for the production workers.
Workers have a proper safety uniforms.
V. Experience Gained
Two day plant tour give us a lot of inspiration and motivation. It make me realize
the true meaning of work in our field as an Industrial Engineering. This activity help us to
visualize what every production area are and how it works, what are the needed process
behind every finished product produce by manufacturing company.
To sum up, I earned lot of knowledge about the real world situation especially in
production, in planning and the importance of computerized control process.
B. Class
As graduating students we all know that the discussion in every class in our school
is insufficient for us to fully determine all the things we need to know for our future job.
This kind of subject or activity will help in order to connect with other people and to gain
learning and add knowledge about the different process in making different products. And
also to know what is going on to the said Real World.
C. Company
All companies must be ready to share knowledge and to view their manufacturing
situation. The companies must need to have a representative in order to give small talk or
orientation about the do’s and don’ts inside the company that will also give some definition
first and most important; they need to share their experience in working in the industry.
