Design of wave wall

The existing wave wall for Berri Island project is considered to be a concrete wall topped with a HCIS Fence (Category
4). The dimension details of the wave wall (in mm) is appended herewith for reference. The wave wall is considered to
be acted by wind loading on a 2m (assumed) high fence and a cursory check is done for

a) Stability in sliding and overturning about point X

b) Structural design adequacy

Design is done as per AASHTO LRFD

Loads

Restoring gravity loads due to wave wall

Area LA wrt X Moment (A*x)

(m2) (m) m3
2.625 1.25 3.28

Unit weight of concrete = 20 kN/m3

Weight of wave wall = 52.5 kN/m
Moment of weight of wave wall wrt X = 65.63 kNm/m
Lateral force on wave wall

Wind loads on fencing above wave walls

Height of fencing above wave wall = 2m

Wind pressure = 1.9 kN/m2 Table 3.8.1.2.1-1
Assuming wind base velocity 160 km/hr AASHTO LRFD

Wind force = 3.8 kN/m

CG of this force wrt X = 2.50 m

Overturning moment wrt X = 9.50 kNm/m

Stability Checks

a) Sliding

Total restoring force = 52.5 kN/m

Total lateral force = 3.80 kN/m
Resistance factor Φ = 0.90 Table 11.5.6-1
AASHTO LRFD
FOS in sliding = 52.5 x 0.9 = 12.43 >1
3.80 OK

b) Overturning (about point X) 11.6.3.3 AASHTO LRFD

Total restoring moment = 65.63 kNm/m

Total overturning moment = 9.50 kNm/m
Total weight of wall = 52.5 kN/m
Base width B = 2.5 m

Resultant acts at x = 65.63 - 9.5 = 1.070 m

52.5

B/2 - x = 1.25 - 1.07 = 0.180 < B/4 = 0.625 Falls in middle half of base, OK

c) Base pressure

Total vertical force (P) = 52.5 kN/m

Moment about centerline of base (M) = 9.50 kNm/m

Base width (B) = 2.5 m

Base area (A) = 2.5 m2

Section modulus (Z) = 1.042 m3

Maximum pressure = P/A+M/Z = 30.12 kN/m2

Minimum pressure = P/A - M/Z = 11.88 kN/m2

*Pressure limitations should be maintained at site
