Position Summary: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

General Job Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer must have the ability to apply engineering principles,
physics and materials science for the analysis, design, installation and maintenance of
mechanical systems. Reviewing specifications and other data to develop mechanical layouts,
create solutions, which can range from small component designs to large-scale systems. Will
have the opportunity to work on all stages of a system, from the early research, development and
design all the way through to the installation and final commissioning.

A. Job Responsibilities:

1. Carries out detailed mechanical design, simulation and design verification testing, as
required. Agreeing the mechanical design approach with the Engineering Manager and
Senior Mechanical Design Engineers
2. Responsible for the specification compliance of designs
3. Responsible for mechanical part design with material selection taking into consideration
obsolescence, availability and cost
4. Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews
5. Ensures design files and information are kept up to date, and stored in accordance with
departmental procedures
6. Highlights all mechanical technical risks to the Engineering Manager
7. Keeps up to date with the latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards
8. Follows departmental processes relating to management of designs
9. Responsible for identifying mechanical part numbers in accordance with the material
finishes
10. Responsible for meeting design to cost figures
11. Responsible for carrying out design change requests in a timely manner
12. Ensures the mechanical design output fits in with all other aspects of the design

 13. Work closely with operations, manufacturing and production engineers to ensure
products are designed for manufacture
14. Responsible for reporting progress of all assigned tasks to the Engineering Manager and
Project Management teams
15. Undertaking research
16. Testing and measuring the performance of systems
17. Designing and implementing systems to improve efficiency and sustainability
18. Keeping up to date with the latest design standards
19. Solving complex problems
20. Analyzing and interpreting data and information
21. Creating reports and documentation
22. Responsible for 2D detailing with GD&T and DFM
23. Responsible for generation of Assembly drawings with bills of materials
24. Responsible for production techniques and costing
25. Minimum 4 years’ experience in CAD tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD Fusion 360
26. Strong knowledge on links, bar mechanisms, gears, pulleys, motion transmission systems
27. Hands-on experience with thermal, displacement, stress, structural & vibration analysis

C. Additional Skills:

1. Ability to understand/produce technical drawings

2. Ability to co-ordinate with the other discipline Engineers (electronics and optics) within
the department to produce multidisciplinary design solutions

Qualifications:

Degree in Mechanical Engineering with equivalent experience

Experience:

1. Mechanical Design
2. 3 to 6 years of experience in a similar role
3. AutoCAD /Inventor, solid works experience desirable
4. Familiarity with technical specifications, data sheets
5. Knowledge of 3D Printing, Rapid prototyping with different materials
