Origin of Badminton

Modern badminton can be traced to mid-19th century British India. It was created by British military
officers stationed there. A net was added to the traditional English game of battledore and shuttlecock.
As it was popular in the British garrison town of Poona, the game came to be known as "Poona" or
"Poonai" Initially, woollen balls were preferred by the upper classes in windy or wet conditions, but
ultimately shuttlecocks took over the role of a "ball." This game was taken by retired officers who got
back to England. It was introduced as a game for the guests of the Duke of Beaufort at his stately home
'Badminton' in Gloucestershire, England where it became popular. Hence, the origin of the name
"Badminton."

Badminton Association of India

Badminton Association of India is the governing body of badminton in India. BAI is an association
registered under the societies act. It was formed in 1934, and has been holding national-level
tournaments in India since 1936.

First Badminton in Olympics

The 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich saw the first appearance of badminton, as a demonstration sport.
Two decades later the sport debuted in competition at the Barcelona 1992 games where 4 events were
held, with singles and doubles events for both men and women.

Badminton Sports

Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be
played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" and "doubles.

History of Rules of Badminton

Sports played with racquets and a shuttlecock most likely developed in ancient Greece around two
thousand years ago but are also mentioned in China and India. In England a children’s game known as
“battledore and shuttlecock” in which players used a paddle – a battledore – to keep a small feathered
cork – a shuttlecock – in the air as long as possible – was popular from medieval times.

Singles

- At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right
service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
Doubles

- A side has only one ‘set’.

- The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.

- At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service
court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.

Court of Badminton

The overall dimensions of abadminton court is 20 feet by 44 feet. The lines along these
measurementsmark the sidelines for doubles play and long service lines for singles play. The net line
marks the middle of thecourt where the net is placed, creating a 22 feet by 20 feet area on each side of
the net.

Badminton Net

The official height of the badminton net is 1.55 meters high (5 feet 1 inch) at the outside edges. It should
be 1,524 meters high (5 feet) in the center section. Two upright posts placed over the doubles sidelines
support the net.

Badminton Court Size in Feet and Meters

What is the badminton court size in square feet? BWF court rules say it must measure 44 feet by 17 feet
wide for a single's game (approximately 13.4 x 5.2 meters). Whereas a double's game gets played on a
court sized 44 feet by 20 feet wide (approximately 13.4 x 6.3 meters).

Size of Raquet in Badminton

The length of a badminton racket is measured from the bottom of the racket handle/grip to the tip of the
racket head. See illustration above. A typical racket length is between 665m to 675mm, and should not
exceed 680mm.

Name of Officials in Badminton

Officials are the judges responsible to ensure a fair badminton game is being played. They consists of

Parts of Shuttlecock

A shuttlecock weighs around 4.75 to 5.50 grams (0.168 to 0.194 oz). It has 16 feathers with each feather
70 millimetres (2.8 in) in length. The diameter of the cork is 25 to 28 millimetres (0.98 to 1.10 in) and the
diameter of the circle that the feathersmake is around 54 millimetres (2.1 in).

Rules of service

In badminton, the serve must be hit in an upwards direction, with an underarm hitting action. You are
not allowed to play a tennis style serve. The main rule here is that when you hit the shuttle, it must be
below your waist. To be exact, the rules define this to be a height level with the lowest part of your
ribcage.

Scoring System

- A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.

- Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.

- The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.

- At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.

- At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.

- The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
