1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The basic function of the fire pump controller is to start the fire pump to
maintain the water system pressure.
The controller will start the fire pump automatically upon receipt of a signal
indicating a pressure drop in the fire protection system.
Automatic operation can also be initiated from other sources, such as
pressure switch.

A pushbutton is mounted on the front of the controller for local manual starting
of the fire pump.
A removable, undrilled, gland plate is provided in the bottom of the enclosure
for cable entries and exits.

2 FUNCTIONS

2.1 AUTOMATIC STARTING

i. Pressure drop in fire protection water system.
ii. Opening of any normally closed contact in the controller external
initiation circuit.

2.2 MANUAL STARTING

i. ‘EMERGENCY MANUAL START’ button on controller door.

2.3 MANUAL STOPPING

i. ‘STOP’ pushbutton on controller door (operative only if initiating signal
is not present).

2.4 ALARMS AND SIGNALS

i. ‘PUMP RUNNING’ volt-free change-over contact is provided for
signalling to a remote location that the main contactor is energised.
ii. ‘SUPPLY ON’ indicator on controller door illuminates when the supply
is healthy and correctly connected and that the control circuit is healthy.
3 OPERATION

3
3.1 GENERAL
The circuit breaker must always be left in the ON POSITION.

3.2 EMERGENCY MANUAL START

This is designed to be used in the event of a control circuit failure.
The emergency button should be pressed to the ‘RUN’ position.
This emergency button is for EMERGENCY USE ONLY.
To stop motor, rotate the emergency button to ‘OFF’ position, then press
‘STOP’ button.

4 REMOTE ALARM CONTACTS

4.1 PUMP ON DEMAND

A single pole changeover contact is provided to indicate that an automatic
start has been initiated due to a fall in the system water pressure.

4.2 PUMP RUNNING

A single pole changeover contact is provided to indicate that the starter has
accelerated into the run mode, i.e. the delta contactor (DC) has closed.

4.3 PHASE REVERSAL

A single pole changeover contact is provided to indicate that the supply is not
connected correctly.

5 MAINTENANCE

The controller should require very little maintenance. The following is

recommended:

WEEKLY
i. Run the complete system through both automatic and manual start
sequences.

PERIODICALLY – EVERY SIX MONTHS

i. Isolate the 3 phase supply to the starter, and then check for loose
connections, particularly on the contactors, where vibration is
present.
ii. Lubricate door hinges and handles.
