Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson incorporates the use of a hard text that could be shown on
the interactive white board to offer alternatives for visual learners, along with a hard copy text available. The
voice recording on the PowerPoint offers auditory options along with a video of the book, “NO, David!” that
could be slowed down. Vocabulary and the big ideas are easily clarified at the beginning of the lesson using
PowerPoint. This lesson allows the students to pick a time they felt a certain way and use the new language
they have learned to describe that experience. A word wall with emotion descriptive words will be created to
allow self-assessment and reflection.
Lesson idea implementation: Gather the students to the front of the classroom. Tell them that today they
will learn about how characters feel, act, or look and how this will help them understand a story better. We
will first introduce new words they can use to describe feelings. This will be introduced by the emotions
PowerPoint. Next, we will read aloud the story No, David! by David Shannon. Model using pictures to help
identify how David is feeling. Students will have an opportunity to act out examples of the feelings by playing
charades.

Students will answer the prompt, David felt, when he, students will tell you how David felt in a certain
situation. Students will then have to think of a time they felt that way and explain why. The teacher will then
ask the students to turn to a partner and say another word for happy is or something new I learned today
was. I will conclude the lesson by going over the PowerPoint again and reviewing the word list we have
created for the different emotions.
Reflective Practice: I would include more videos to this lesson preferably a song about emotions and different
language that could be used to describe them. I would use Plickers as an exit ticket to determine the level of
understanding my students have. This will allow me to see which students may need this topic re-taught.
