Progress Being Made on Concerns Over Minnedosa Lake

T he Friends of Lake Minnedosa (FOLM) is a group of

eight concerned citizens, volunteers and stakehold-
ers. The group consists of residents, cottagers, boaters,
fishermen, etc. who have watched the deterioration of
the lake in the last few years. “We can either be compla-
cent and stand by doing nothing, or we take action and
try and save our lake,” explains Barry McPhail, FOLM
member.
The group has three key issues when it comes to the
weeds within lake and the north end of the lake silting in,
becoming unusable.
Several meetings and discussions have been had be-
tween the Town of Minnedosa and the group to discuss
several matters. Recently, during a Town Council meet-
ing, it was reported that upon discussions with Manitoba
Infrastructure and the Town of Minnedosa, the province
has determined that operating levels of Minnedosa Lake
can be increased by one foot without negatively affecting
over to Manitoba Infrastructure.
The lake currently sits at 1,681.5 feet above sea level
and with the increase of one foot, it will bring it to 1,682.5
feet above sea level. “We are very pleased with the news
to raise the lake level,” stated McPhail. “It will help the
lakes health on several fronts; namely improve fishing,
help control weed proliferation, slow silting at north end,
and make boating and swimming better.”
