AU Special Representative visits AMISOM personnel undergoing treatment in

Nairobi hospitals

Nairobi, 28 June 2019 - The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African
Union Commission for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, yesterday visited
African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) personnel admitted in various hospitals
in Nairobi.

Ambassador Madeira, who was on his quarterly visit to assess the health condition of
the AU Mission’s employees admitted to the hospitals, expressed satisfaction with the
treatment being administered to the patients and wished them a quick recovery.

“Each time we visit the hospitals we feel elated, encouraged and happy at the way our
patients are treated. We are content that our soldiers admitted in these hospitals
leave the facilities happy and fully recovered,” Ambassador Madeira said.

AMISOM personnel requiring specialised treatment and close monitoring are normally
airlifted to Nairobi and admitted to various level three hospitals in the capital city.
Ambassador Madeira was accompanied by his Special Advisor on Military Affairs, Lt.
Gen. Osman Noor Soubagleh, and the AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Tigabu
Yilma Wondimhunegn.

The African Union Special Representative held discussions with the senior
management of the hospitals and expressed his gratitude to their medical staff for
offering quality care to AMISOM personnel.

“On behalf of the African Union and on behalf of the Chairperson of the African Union
Commission, Moussa Faki, I express my sincere appreciation to Karen Hospital
leadership for the quality treatment that you provide to our patients,” he stated.

The director of Karen Hospital, Dr. Dan Gikonyo, thanked the Mission’s senior
leadership for visiting the hospital, adding that the medical facility was pleased to
partner with AMISOM to provide quality medical care to its workers.

“We feel honoured and we must keep the promise we made to you, that we will give
you the best care available anywhere in the world,” Dr. Gikonyo said.

Last month, a delegation from the African Union Peace Support Operations Division
(AU PSOD) visited soldiers admitted in various Nairobi hospitals and thanked them for
their selfless contribution to securing peace and stability in Somalia.
