LA ASTRONOMÍA PREHISPÁNICA EN
MÉXICO
Abstract
Astronomy was a fundamental constituent part of the Mesoamerican
culture. Its importance can be recognized nowadays in archaeological
remains which include ceramics, stelas, mural paintings, codices and
architecture. This review briefly summarizes the main evidence for the
existence of well-developed practice in observing the sky and in making
use of astronomical knowledge for the ritual strengthening of authority
and political power. Particular emphasis is given to the alignment of
architectural structures according to points of view which take into account
the essential characteristics of the Mesoamerican calendrical system.
